Clarke 160TM man enough for Defender jobs?

Hi everyone,

I'm recently a new owner of a Defender 90 and have been itching to learn MIG welding for years and now I have the spare cash to give it a go.

Will the Clark 160TM be man enough for all the jobs one is likely to do on a Defender? Chassis patching, roof-rack fabrication, welding on new cross member etc?

I've got enough to buy the above welder new, or I could hold out and get a second hand one with more ability.

What your thoughts?

no worries, it will do the job perfectly, I think its everything up to 5mm thick. Its a very good all rounder.

I have a 160tm for work on my Jimny similar to what you have in mind. Should be OK but from 4mm upwards it will be starting to struggle, lots of prep will be needed to get good strong welds as I understand it but I am no expert and haven't used mine on my car yet. In theory as previously said it should be OK for 5mm.

Anything more powerful though and you have to start thinking about different power supplies as a 13amp domestic plug will start struggling.

I've been advised to think about arc if I want to do anything really chunky...
