clarke 151 mig not working

a friend lent me his mig welder. it had wire in allready , so i pluged it in earthed it to some metal just to see if it worked ok , the light come on on the on button but nothing happend , the motor on the wire feed never moved.
i did not huck the gas up but i would have thought it would still spit the wire out the gun with out gas, i was not trying to weld just test it was working.

my friend said it was working when he put it in my car ,what could it be if i need to get it fixed ?
it is all dusty and has been well used.

The light on many of the Clarke's only comes on when the thermal overload trips.

Could be a wire has come loose inside. I'd check the connections.

the lights on but its as though its pulsing aswell if you know what i mean

While you've got the sides off following Scott's advice, give it a blow through with compressed air if you have any; it sounds like it may have been some time since it was last used if it's covered in dust outside - it may be the same inside!
