Clarke 150 te - Golf Gti Repairs

Hi Guys,

Bought myself a Clarke 150te last night for some welding I am doing on my Golf Gti.

It came with a small disposable bottle of CO2. I have heard that CO2/Argon is best for the Clarke welders?

What is the best way of adapting the 150te so that I can use a bigger gas bottle i.e. 10kg CO2/Argon Mix?

Also, at the minute I think it has 0.6mm wire installed. Does the wire feed bobbin unscrew and mount in the opposite way in order to use 0.8mm?

I think 0.6mm will be fine for the plating I am doing on the car. It is not majorly structural stuff.

One of these will sort out your gas conversion.
The feed roller should be easily reversible, one groove for 0.6mm wire, the other for 0.8mm though as you say, stick with 0.6 if it's just thin stuff.

O.6mm will be ideal for everything on a golf GTI. And the 150 TE is a good welder!
get a regulator and rent a bottle if you are going to be doing a lot of welding on the Golf- there is always a lot more to do and those little bottles last just minutes.

Show us some piccies- is it a Mk1?

Thanks for the advice guys. I have a couple more patches to do at the minute - jacking point either side and a couple of grommets to weld up. Some bits on the chassis legs too. I think I might be better off getting a bigger bottle as I will need to do some practice too.

It will be a worthwhile investment too for when I start on my next project which I think will be an aircooled VW.

Here are some pics of the Golf - it is a Mk2 originally and 8v Gti but I am converting it to a 2.0 16v from a Mk3, probably running megasquirt. Ported and polished head, lightened flywheel and maybe some uprated cams. I am modifying the suspension setup also so that the track is slightly wider.
