clark100e overheating?????

ive had my clark100e mig for about 5 years and had trouble free welding untill yesterday,i was welding some thin sheet steel and my mate noticed a burning smell coming from the machine,so it was quickly knocked off and opened up to discover the earth lead that attaches to the work was very hot+where it joines to the small transformer had started to burn.
It is now welding with a pulsing type action when i pull the trigger??
any ideas would be appreciated

sounds like the joint has failed and ass it reheats it moves away and when it cools it reconnects. How is the cable connected?

it seems to be soldered to the start of the coil in the small transformer with some heat braiding over it

is is possoble to put a new earth lead in?
