Citroen Berlingo power steering issue

I’ve just had a call from my dad as he’s having problems with his 2006 1.9D berlingo. He’s had a new power steering pump fitted (I’m not sure why) and it’s blown the hoses. According to the garage it’s due to the rack being knackered. Seems a bit odd to me. Would have thought the pump would have some kind of pressure relief bypass in it.
He’s now trying to find some replacement hoses to fit and is expecting to have a new/recon rack.
Any thoughts?

I'd think same as you.

Surely there's a pressure relief valve in the system.What happens to the high pressure at high speed when steering isn't needed (motorways) ?

Possibly the old hoses were on their limit and the new pump tipped them over the edge but then why need a new rack??

I fitted a new oil pump to a classic ford and it blew seals. Stripped the new pump and found the pressure relief valve had stuck closed (after being sat on a shelf for years?). Free'd the valve and no more problems.
