Circuit breaker question

I am in the process of fitting an old style fuse board (consumer unit) in the garage. Because it is an old style one with wired fuses, i have obtained a circuit breaker that i shall put before the fuse board. I cannot work out whether the supply enters the circuit breaker from the bottom or the top-see picture.

either way it doesnt matter top or bottom if its electronic feed will be from the top

For interest why are you fitting an old style fuse box. New ones were under £40 from Screwfix last time I bought one and have an RCD and cool trip switches. I understand the trips are a lot faster to react than the old fuses.

I have a couple of old style wired boards. Yes i agree that the CBs trip faster. This is the reason that i am fitting the seperate cb with the wired board (now picturerd) for safety reasons.

the one u have is mechanical a contactum probs 60 amp with 30 miliamp trip. mem make the electronic ones and are sensitive to lightning and surges. yours can be mains fed top or bottom

If that's an RCD it won't trip on high currents.

You need appropiate MCBs (Minature Circuit Breakers) for each circuit and an RCD (Residual Current Device) protecting the whole lot, but not usually the lighting circuits.

a new db is nice rcd with mcb but theres nothing wrong with rewirable fuses as long as theres the rcd for earth protection in the line. its better to have the lights through it as well for safety the lights will probably be cliped direct or covered so dont realy have to be through the trip but if there buried behind walls under 50 mm they must be through trip note the trip works on earth leakage not load current

The device i have is an RCCB/RCD model No B8003/2 to be precise (see pic link) I was using the term CB in a generic fashion.

That's what I thought, so it won't help the fuses fuse more quickly, hence my querying this statement "Yes i agree that the CBs trip faster. This is the reason that i am fitting the seperate cb with the wired board (now picturerd) for safety reasons" in post #4

As regarding lights, if you must protect them with an RCD best use a seperate one from the power circuits. If a problem causes the power to trip it's a lot safer that the lights stay on.

theres a host of things that can be done all at a cost .fit a twin rcd 17 th edition board but i hardly think its worth it on a workshop if only one power supply feeds the sockets on a ringmain wire a bit of 4mm out of 30 amp fuse to the rcd then 2.5 round the ring whatever all will be safe and comply
