chop saws ?

I have an old Makita abrasive chop saw, I'm rather fond of it because I got it out of a skip and made new brushes for it, but it won't cut straight vertically, I tried shimming the hinge but it didn't work, I'm thinking it must be a worn bearing ? What do you think ?

There's also the problem that carbide blade saws are much better, is it possible to get a blade that works at the higher speed of an abrasive saw ?

I've often used a 4 inch high speed tungsten brick /stone disc to cut metals such as aluminium , .stainless & 2 inch mild box steel , the tungsten has embedded industrial diamonds in it and there are only about six segments around the disc with a 1.5 mm gap between them. The segments are laser welded to the plate not silver soldered on
I have a cheap Aldi special holder to bolt the angle grinder in .

Prior to that I had a Stayer 300 mm or 280 mm slow start high speed chop saw for wood , made a simple clamping bar out of 5 mm x 2 inch alu angle , got a Diamant Bort ( sp ) tungsten metal cutter disc at a slightly small diameter and a converting insert . It was OK but the feeding in had to be very carefully done .


So perhaps have a look in the Diamant Bort discs , they are not cheap but they are really good kit .

I have a Makita 2414 that I bought new and it was out cutting vertically, I sent it back and the distributor sent it back to Makita. They couldn't find anything wrong with it but replaced it anyway. The new one arrived and was just the same (I now know why they couldn't find anything wrong with it). The distributor asked what I was cutting on (a workmate) and pointed out how flexible the base is. I now use shims to twist the base to get it square to the disk before I start cutting it isn't perfect but it is close enough for me. Apparently the non abrasive saws have a stronger base but I couldn't justify the extra expense for the infrequent use

My dewalt tct is just the same, at some point I'll make a heavy plate base for it and mount it with some feed rollers etc, but haven't the space atm.
