Chop Saw

Well my Makita chop saw has finally died (spilling zinc plating chemicals all over it last year didn't help).

Who can recommend/comment on some of the available ones.

Looks like about 2-250 for bosch/dewalt etc but the Titan ones at 80 look "ok" for occasional use which is all it would get.

Any experience?

I'd rather stick with the abrasive type rather than the metal blades - I know what to expect then.

I've got the Titan one from Screwfix. Mine only gets occasional use and it is fine. Prior to that I also had a Ferm chopsaw for a number of years. No complaints. I've never used the Makita equivalent so I can't directly compare the two but I don't think I'm missing out on too much.

I have a Screwfix saw from before Titan, bought in about 1998. It hasn't had much use for the last few years but in the first 10 years it was really abused and is still going strong. I haven't used the spare brushes that came with it yet.

I've got a Dewalt TCT and I like it, the blades can be sharpened/tips replaced. The cut depth remains the same throughout the life.

Is the Makita not fixable or is it not viable.

ive got a fw titan tools, a 5kg SDS drill, a jigsaw, circular saw, tile saw, a 9" grinder...not had a problem with any of them and some of them get some proper abuse, especially the SDS drill and jigsaw and they just refuse to give up

It could be with a bit of work but I've been making do for a while. I spilt some chemicals on it last year and the pivot pretty much seized up (corrosion). That and the motor has always been a bit lazy (I bought it second hand), and the guard is a real pain. Unfortunately the little time I get to play in the garage needs to be making the things, not making the tools work again. Time is precious.

Thanks for the link - it looks good. Titan also seems to be well reviewed. I've found a poss deal on another makita, I'll see what comes of that first.

Ha ha. She did look at the broken pivot shaft and agree it needed replacing. Of course then it was asked where the saw came from in the first place, along with that thing over there, and whatever that is.... "Had them for years, long before we met."
