I did a test using Jotun, sprayed one part using regular spray gun and brush painted another. Once they cured I went at them with a dental scribe to see if the sprayed one was compromised or weaker. There was no difference.
One tip to avoid over thinning is to heat the paint instead.

I'm going to try heating to minimise the thinning. If Jotun say you can thin upto 5% then I'm happy to go up to 10%. I tried brushing the stuff on, you get a bad finish and can't get into tight spaces like an air gun does.

While I was on the phone to Jotun I also asked them if it's ok to use temporary coatings to stop the parts rusting between when they get blasted and painted. They said that yes, you can use a "shop primer" or "holding primper" and their one is called Jotun Muki EPS. I asked if I could use the easier POR15 temporary coating, they said they don't know and can't recommend it.

Having used POR15 I wouldn't advise it, I found it was pretty poo to be honest, beside that, POR stands for Paint On Rust so it's designed for.....painting straight on rust which isn't what you want to be leaving under an Epoxy.

In fairness to the stuff I did prep the surface back to clean, bare metal which isn't the way to do it so my assessment of POR is unfair really.

From what I've read and been told, no paint properly sticks to rust. It's amazing Hammerite have never been sued for their "straight on rust" claims. Even in a medium severity environment it lasts only a few months.

How long you leaving it bare? The Screwfix gal spray is fine for shortish durations and in your workshop otherwise I'd just slap on some Jotun or other 2k epoxy.

The Jotun Muki EPS is an epoxy primer also and the advantage of it is it's 1/3 cheaper than 87 but I think you only get it in 18.5l drums so you'd need to be painting a lot to make it worth buying as a holding coat.

Well my wife limits my garage time so sometimes it sits around for weeks before I can strip enough parts to bother hanging them up and mixing up some spray paint :/

if youve got time to apply shop primers /clean off whatever before epoxy then surely you have enough time to put the proper stuff straight on ? or get up an hour earlier or such , sounds like your just making life harder

Yep it seems pointless. The POR temp coating makes more sense because you just dip the parts in it.

She used to help out a bit, we did an engine swap once, was good fun, but got a baby now, waiting for baby to grow up and we can work on my 4x4 spaceframe buggy together I hope My kid sisters used to help out when I was into motorbikes. When the older kid sister grew up and got her first car she was able to swap out a faulty steering rack almost by herself, and she thanked me for having got her helping in the garage all those years ago.

Not on the car but my mrs helps with some of the diy jobs. She made about ¾ of the concrete for the patio at our cottage.
