I would myself pop along to a engineering shop and ask if they have a piece of gauge plate of the size you want or ask them to cut a piece for you which wouldn't cost much, then you can treat the end yourself with a blow torch to cherry red and just dip it in cold water and sharpen as required doing it this way also means it will not shatter unlike using an old file could possibly do.

I'm just starting out in metalworking again so don't have the necessary equipment for anything other than the most basic stuff. I'll mostly be working aluminium for starters purely because although it's not as cheap it's easier for me to work with than steel. I do plan on eventually having a modestly equipt workshop though.
