chinese motor on lathe

A mate has acquired a lathe and asked if he can run it on 3 phase in the UK, The motor details are in chinglish but i can read it says 380v and 220v, The power says 2.5kVA so not a really big motor, He has been told not to run it on Uk 415v 3 phase and he needs a transformer of some sort, Any one had anything like this before?

I’d double check that whole machine doesn’t need 3 phase to run, not just the motor - it looks to me like it should have proper 3 phase.

If it does then you’ll need to find some way of powering the controls side separate to the motor, which may well be easily do - able from a single phase supply but it may not be as easy as just putting an inverter on the motor.

Sorry my mistake I thought you were thinking of running this on single phase, that’ll teach me not to read the post correctly!! I would have thought it would be better to provide it with the correct voltage if possible, though I would have thought the motor “should” be able to cope with 415.

I can’t see why that transformer shouldn’t work though it’s rated for 440 - 380 so you’ll get correspondingly less out of it at 415 v, probably somewhere near 350v ish.

The differences in Foreign and UK AC voltages is usually because we use "effective voltage" AKA RMS (Root Mean Squared) to measure AC; elsewhere it's often an average against the peak value. RMS comes out at .707 of the peak voltage; the average is .637 of the peak according to Google.

Don,t most of the three phase switch gear and motors say 380volt....?
Use a few Dol starters that say this and 1machine has a biggish motor from Taiwan that says 380/440v....
Would seem to me u'd be ok.....
But others may know better....?
