Ok, have got a couple of chinaman hats to make (as a favour) from copper, Question I havent made any cones since collage and cant rember the layout fomular, If anyone can Id much appriciate it
Working radius is the slanting edge, to pointy tip (the hypotenuse, on a half plan of the cone) - draw a circle at that rad.
For length of edge, you can multiply the diameter of the base of the cone by 3 and 1/7.(pie) Measure off around drawn circle with tape measure, strip of thin steel etc etc.
Or use dividers - 12ths of base of cone dia will be accurate enough, apply same to the drawn circle.
Add on your lap joint etc. Cut.
If that's not clear enough, I can scan the relevant pages...
Me mate dug me out his step by step metalwork book's tnight he was awarded them as a prize in 1966 as an apprentice great stuff in there refering lots to aspestos gloves... I thought some of my referance stuff was old, I guess your right on the dunces vs chinamans hat
