Chevorlet Name for Special Fasteners ?

Hello All

Well finally got tired of the Chevy cutting on hills resulting from a combination of bloclking fuel filters and poor chinesium aftermarket fuel pumps. I have the tank out now but I have forgotten the name of the special fasteners that Chevy used in the 40-60. I need a screw driver that will remove them so I get get the sender unit out. I am planning on using one of the homebree rust removers based around citric acid to try and clean it out. Thought I may make this a bit of a project thread as it will probably go horribly wrong !!! need deep in petrol today.

The bow tie fasteners are also used on Holly carbs.
There are three different sizes of bowtie bits in the WORKZONE set I got from Aldi awhile back, designated C1, C2, and C3, for reference if that helps ?

a decent set of Vice grips, then putting them in the bin....
no harm changing them for st/st socket screws....or brass....

If i could not find the correct tool it would be vice grips but I am happy to keep it in stock as its not like I would ever need to replace a fuel sender in an emergency

For comments:

I think the next part of the job will be to try and clean out the rust from inside the tank. I think given the size of the tank I wont be able to fill it with old nut bolt screws and set up a tumbling solution. I am thinking of making one of the homebrew rust buster chemicals using citric acid and washing soda as it reported works like Evapo-rust but is a fraction of the cost. I have also seen some people cleaning using electrolysis with good results. Assuming I can get it clean I am not planning on coating it and just plan on trying to keep it full of fuel. I think there are some two-part epoxy coatings, but from what I can tell, these are very hit and miss and usually just crumble inside the tank.

Are there any acid solution that will kill old rust and stop new - I am thinking of that Jelly stuff again forget the name. is it muratic acid ?

A mate of mine told me that molasses is (are?) good for cleaning rust from inside fuel tanks, and relatively cheap.

NO!

That's the Victorian name for Hydrochloric Acid and far too aggressive in any usable dilution for this purpose.

Citric acid solution is the cheapest, easiest and most effective option.

I was referring to converting any remaining rust to iron phosphate. I should have said phosphoric acid. I think that evaparust may contain tanic acid which I think may be the same

Phosphoric acid, perhaps. It converts the rust (FeO2 or whatever) to ferrous phosphate (FePO or something), which is insoluble and prevents further rusting. You probably still want to remove any loose rust before treating.

Degrease the tank and knock off the worst of the rust by shaking the tank with abrasive media. The tank is big and is heavy and realistically not in the words of Elvis "there wont be a whole lot of shaking going on"

2) Dissolve the rust for a few days

Citric acid and sodium carbonate + a dash of washing up liquid for taste

3) Convert remaining rust and + more cleaning

Phosphoric acid / descale

4) Neuralise any remaining acid

5) Dry the tank

6) Maybe a sealer ????

Was considering these or similar product called slosh. would maybe be ashamed not to to seal the tank after all this other work, but then I haven't heard good results from people trying to seal tanks anyway. It is a big tank so could get expensive

Getting the media out can be a problem, some folks use nuts & bolts, but again, getting them all out can be fun, another option is a length of chain such as Jack chain as it's easier to fish out.

I do have some old chains good idea. I was going to use a load of nuts and bolts. I don't think the tank has baffles but will have a look once I get the sender unit off

The clutch head screw driver arrived. Slightly concerned that they may cause Cancer and reproductive harm. Makes you wonder what they think I’m planning on doing with them
