Chemical metal

Any recommendations on a good chemical metal?
Intermediate driveshaft bolts onto aluminium engine block have worn and the engine isn’t coming out for another couple of months. Looking for a quick fix to set a couple of studs into the block.
when it’s out I’ll drill out and helicoil it.

I'd also recommend Devcon but I'd clean the holes up as best I could, use new studs and consider it a permanent fix!

I've got an RS branded one, I'm pretty sure it's Loctite 3475 in disguise. I haven't used it in anger yet but playing with it, it seems like good stuff.

Devcon

Any JB weld you buy in Europe is crap. The stuff direct from the US, if you can get it, is a different recipe and not the new euro compliant version

I think that I'd agree with that. American friends rave about JB, but to the limited extent that I've used it, I've not been impressed

The proper JB is really good.

I can’t remember what’s in it that the EU don’t like.

I had some JB Weld several years ago & it was brilliant stuff, the ironmonger that I got it from told me later he couldn’t get it for a while. I saw some in a chandlers & bought it, & it was rubbish, I used it to repair a wallpaper steamer & it went soft in the steam. The original would have been fine for that

There’s lots of devcon variations. You’ll need to get the spec sheets, or even better the MILSPEC of what you want.

I think we used to use Devcon A on ships for repairs. It’s been a while so that maybe wrong but it sticks in my mind for some reason

both are good and used in major chemical works a lot thicker than jb weld and doesnt go all gooey when applied

I used JB weld to make the inlet ports on a aluminium cylinder head smaller about 10 years on its still going fine.

I’ve seen Belzona fix a hole in an alloy block, can’t remember which on it was though.
