Cheater lenses? or those you put in the helmet.

Old age is a pain with the eyesight. Using standard glasses would is sometimes a pain with the headband and where the glasses arms go over the ear so trying out the corrective lenses in the helmet work OK, but now find it annoying to keep taking glasses on and off.

How have others got on with these lenses any thoughts?

I have to wear specs for close up work, and dont have a problem with welding.
When I buy them I make a song and dance about them having to have a big depth of field. If they dont I take them back and make another song and dance.
They can be made to work well. Often the cheapo supermarket glasses work well like this.
This year I graduated to varifocals, and took the first pairs back and made them redo them.

Glasses on and off all the time, Just got a new Lincoln Viking helmet, and because the headband adjusts in all directions there is enough room to wear your regular glasses while welding without them touching the helmet screen. Same issue, I think, eye muscles are relaxing so can not focus close to even to three feet. So need the glasses, 2.25 on my prescription

Hello Adrian, I have used a cheater (2.5d) for a few years now, and had the same problem. Glasses on and off all the time,

My most comfortable helmet is an old Speedglass, but no holder for the lens, the R-Tech one has the holder.

I need to spend more time behind the mask and most likely more ambient light on the work to help the depth of field improve.

Time will tell.

I use my normal specs under my Miller elite no problem, I also have a 1.5 cheater lens, I found the 2.5 to have a fish bowl effect

Im short sighted and use one for TIG welding so I can get see clearer at shorter distances with my glasses on, anything over 18 inches away is blurred. I fine it easier to do MIG welding without a cheater lens though

Same here, Speedglas 9100 + 2.5 cheater lens, I found it takes a while to get use to the rod dipping movement for tig, but so much easier now.

I also use a cheater lens in my Miller Digital Elite helmet, they have a provision to hold a Miller cheater lens, however I also wear my normal bi-focals at the same time, so I just use a lower magnification cheater lens, that way when I take my helmet off I don't have to hunt around to see where I left the glasses. In my case this setup works well.

Useful comments so far that have helped me especially regarding the strength of the cheater lens v prescription and also the double trouble of glasses and cheater - that amused me.

I have to wear glasses under the helmet or I'm semi working blind but the moment The visor is up I have to take the glasses off because they are just for close up work so glasses on glasses off glasses on gets to be my little dance - cheater lens is exactly where you want it whenever you drop the visor.

I have a 1.25 lens in my Viking 3350, because the lens is half the height of the viewing window in the helmet I can use it like a pair of bifocals, the lens is in the top half for welding yet if I tilt my head back I can look through the unmagnified part of the viewing window if I need to.

I just wear my specs if I need better vision of a weld, I have great distance vision but age has seen my short range acuity get worse. Don't see an issue with specs under the visor wear safety specs that way stick welding so I don't get instant slag in the eye on flipping the lid

I need a cheater lens now and was very surprised to find my Optrel Satellite didn't have a lens holder. So I had to gaffer tape it in. Not happy.

Why is it headband assemblies are so crap?

My speedglas had cr@p head gear, bought a new orange esab one from ebay for about £8-00 and fitted it, only took a couple pf minutes and well worth it.
