Cheap Tablet Device

With the new job I'm begining to travel around quite a bit on the train which I'm liking

I'm looking looking for a cheap and cheerful tablet that I can use on the move. Ive got an iPad but don't realy fancy getting it wrecked. Ive got a 4g MiFi device with unlimited data.

Device will only ever be used to surf the web, read a few reports and check the odd email. Don't need it for films, apps etc etc.

Was looking at the Kindle Fire for £30, what other options are out there in this sort of price bracket ?

I use a kindle I think it's great device , if it starts acting up there's a number you call they'll clean it up and breath New life into it. I've had mine five years,,,

I was told the kindle can be a bit unfriendly if you try to watch or read something they sell, they also block the library free to read site, apart from that it would probably be fine., I just dislike anything controlling what I want to do with the tablet.

I have a Samsung Tab something or other and it's spot on but is around £100, I use it for the internet and load the sd card with whatever I want to watch or read.

I've had an Acer IconiaB1 for a few years. Completely reliable and decent battery life.

Amazon fire, 40 quid, its not a iPad, but its damn good at that price. I've got one, the kids..... Strongly reccomended.

I've had a first gen Nexus 7 from when it was launched and have had no issues. It did get slower as Android updated and got more bloated, however a custom rom has it running a stripped down version of the latest Android running perfectly.

Had a Kindle Fire HD for years and it's great for surfing the web etc. It does sometimes not want to play a video but there are ways around that I just can't be arsed!
Pretty tough too it's been bashed about a lot over the last 4/5 years.

+1 it's hard to look past Amazon's pricing on their 7" and 10" tablets.
I have the previous gen 7" and can't fault it - seriously considered getting the replacement as it's just another £49 but then realised that I don't really use it enough to justify buying another, even at that price.

p.s. don't worry about the "ad-supported / special offers" blurb - it just means they display adverts on the home screen when you're not logged in. I never notice them and there's zero intrusion while you're logged in.

Yeah, I should have specified - don't buy the 2nd generation one. A guy at work got the original 7 and it's still going strong. He was so impressed with it I bought the 2013 model, which went wrong and I had to replace it, and now the replacement has gone bad too. It's well documented online.

Sounds good to me, I need something simple that just works, it's never going to be put through its paces and I don't have enough knowledge to Dick around with it if it doesn't do what I want

S'why I like Apple devices but for a tablet, I think the Kindle Fires are incredibly straightforward. Fire and forget

SWMBO has a kindle fire that i bought her a cpl years ago, she likes it. Only thing i don't like about it is the store to get apps, its not the full google play store. She sometimes whinges that she can't get such and such an app so i am guessing amazon have messed with android a bit so not all apps are compatible.

You can install Google play store. Have a Google search on the subject. Did my kids fire over Xmas.

OT. I gave up on tablets and went for a galaxy note. Big enough to browse comfortably but small enough to live in a pocket and I only need to one device.

Yep but, to be honest, that's one of the appeals for me (and, I suspect, for @Parm too). Amazon's store has most of the apps that the geezer-in-the-street needs and anyone who wants to do more is probably comfortable with "side installing" the Google app store.

I put Play on my Kindle Fire, it doesn't make it any more complicated and I use Google search and maps on it a lot of the time. I got mine from Argos, it's a nice little tablet at a very good price. The charging port came loose on mine at 13 months so I contacted Amazon and they sent me a new one and a return box for the old one. I opened the new one up and it installed all my books and apps from the wifi and back up to speed in under an hour.
