Cheap security cam question.

Wondering if something like this

Could be mounted say in the back window of my van sitting on the drive 15-20 away from the house WiFi router, 12v run off a big old diesel battery and work to monitor the area directly outside the house?

Do you need it to connect to the wifi or maybe just record on a loop to SD for review later? If so you could just get a normal dash cam that is designed to run off a vehicle cigarette socket. They come with mounts for glass so that's easier to install I guess. Example:

Different models have better or worse night vision. Some have motion sensors. While you'll lose the ability to connect to wifi, the advantage is the camera stays with the van and records rear-end collisions or people singing along to the radio behind you.

Im no expert but I bought one and it only runs on 2.4 GHz wifi but my wifi is 5GHz.........wouldnt work.....Im told its possible to mess about and switch it......I couldnt do it

Everything is difficult the first time. You should check the back of the wireless router for how to log on to the router itself. Normally you need to connect to the router's configuration by opening a normal browser window (from a computer connected to the network) and typing 192.168.someNumber.anotherNumber (last two jump around per model. It'll be similar to 192.168.1.168). You'll then need to log in with a username (like 'admin') and password - check the back of the router or manual. Stops your neighbours getting in and changing something.

Once logged in it's just like using a mini website. All the router's settings presented via HTML web pages where you click and save settings. From these pages you need to click around the interface looking for "basic wireless" or "wireless" settings. You'll be in the right place when you are looking at the words "channel" and "band". Changing the channel is useful if a neighbour sets up a router on the same channel and your speed drops because of interference, however, see what options you have under "bands" - probably says "5Ghz" at the moment.

You don't need to change anything now, just have a peek for tomorrow's troubleshooting.

ONVIF. Avoid.

You can only monitor the video by connecting it to a Chinese web server and using some horrible Chinese software. If any device on your network is connected to a server, all of the data on that network is available to a hacker. If you really know what you're doing, there is a way around it but it's not untypical for these softwares to have hidden back door admin accounts.

I will be delighted to be proved wrong.

Other computers/ devices will have to reconnect to the new SSID (wireless name) and enter the password for that (that's not the password for accessing the admin of the router). Should only take a few clicks and seconds.

Rule of thumb: 5GHz is great for speed but doesn't have range; 2.4GHz has the reverse - range (reaches into the garden say) but isn't as fast.

If you're hoping to place the camera behind glass and rely on built in IR for night vision then you'll most likely end up with horrible reflections.
