Cheap plasma cutter...

I'm after a plasma cutter for cutting car bodywork. I will be running it from a domestic supply and ideally would rather not use a separate compressor... Any recommendations for one that will do me for a car or two? Thanks, Christian

Generally people don't recommend the ones with built in plasmas, but I have a Sureweld 'kompressor' model which has lasted well, and works fine if you don't have stacks of cutting to do all at once.

Of course, anything with a build in compressor running from a 13A plug will be sharing its maximum power draw between the plasma and the compressor, so you'll never get as much cajones out of one of these as you would a non-built-in one. Having said that, its damn handy sometimes.

Mine has lasted a lot longer than a car or two... Just about any plasma will cut bodywork just fine.

Thanks Astro-al, okay I think I'll forget about one with a built in compressor. I do have a good compressor so it's not problem apart from needing 2x13A supplies at the same time but I'll work it out! What about this cut40 stuff, any good?

I bought the IFL Cut 40 model in Weldequips shop above about 6 months ago and I have to say I'm very impressed with its abilities, cuts 2mm sheet like a knife thru butter and even on 6mm plate it doesn't seem to bother much. Its a bit dearer than the ebay specials, but its from a respected manufacturer (even if its made in china) and backed up by Steves excellent support.

Not my choice mate, yours, ie. the punter (market forces as you once yourself told me); I'd sell Hypertherms all day long...and sleep properly at night! but given the choice, 9.99 out of 10 go for the cheap option

I just bought one of these (to replace a Hypertherm!)...



...which is an SPT Splitfire. So far I'm really pleased with it. The company have recently put a small single phase machine on the market, which should be perfect for cars. At least they are made in Sweden, and not China.
