there are quite a few vitara's within budget, it doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something that will get me from the lane into the field and onto the shooting ground

Nothing wrong with Vitaras plenty capable off road too. Look very carefully if your considering a rough looking truck - the problem with 4x4s is that by the time they start to look rough they are usually in a real bad way underneath. When we started looking for ours we took the view that it didn't matter if it looked rough so long as it was reliable but on crawling underneath a few we realised that it would cost a fortune (didn't have the kit at the time) to get them through the next MOT - which is exactly why they are up for sale at a good price in the first place. Not saying that there aren't bargains out there to be had but they were few and far between when we were in your position 4 years ago.

i knew a farming family that had 2 mk 1 pandas for going round the sheep -swore by them ,by no means road legal they'd gone well past their last mot.

and i would surgest a Vauxhall frontera... for 500ish you chould get a not too bad early 2.0 sport..
they are very under rated. and will go on forever..

i currently have 2... one for road and one to play in and soon to show off in shows

i had totally forgot about the Vauxhall. Never seen one off road though. My father neighbour was bought one by his son about 6 years ago but he couldn't get on with it, too high for him to get in and out off with arthritis. Will have a look see how many are about.
