What a cool idea! An old well made B&D one from a boot fair would be an ideal choice for that. The duty cycle is likely to be significantly higher than a modern cheaply made one. You'd probably make the whole thing for a fiver!

Possibly the American equivalent of Cillit Bang? I have just been (reliably?) informed by Mrs Miller that Coca Cola is also very good. Evidently it's ph value is only 2 points below Sulphuric Acid due to its high concentration of Phosphoric Acid.

When I was an apprentice for the MOD many many years ago, we had enormous ultrasonic cleaning tanks that were full of nothing more than soapy water. They would clean up circuit boards brilliantly overnight...

An alternative 'power' source could be an old loudspeaker attached to a transformer. Depending on size anything from 5-24 volts at 1-5 amps should suffice. Then the tank could be mounted on a sheet of metal solidly bolted to the speaker instead of the grill.

CA is a handy tool for removing calcium deposits as well as most corrosion products, but great care must be taken with nickel as it seems to completely dissolve in CA. This type of plating is often used on the elements of cheap kettles and is totally lost when removing calcium deposits from them.

I've also been wondering......... Some years ago I saw a place putting a surface finish on aluminium in a "bath" of powder which was vibrated. It looked like liquid until the guy dipped his hand in and pulled a handful out and it ran back out of his hand more like sand. I wonder if this would do a similar job with a suitable abrasive. I'm thinking I might have a go on something with a tub full of baking soda.

Fizzy coke works great as an unsticker of rusty bits so would work well butlet it settle before opening.

I've a Bransonic 3 gallon Ultrasonic cleaner and have often wondered about that. Trouble is it would be expensive to replace it if I bust it, finding out?

I believe that the active ingredient in cola is merely citric acid. As the pure crystalline form is available from any home brew shop you can make it up to the strength you require for each batch. Tiny 50 gram (2 oz.) tubs are horrendously expensive, so just buy it in bulk lots of 1-5 kilos (2-10 lbs) depending on how much cleaning you think you need to do.

I made a vibrating table for de-bubbling plaster casting. Two bits of thick ply seperated by some Honda genset mounts. Motor mounted on the lower one connected to an eccentric weight on the top one by a flex shaft (bit of rubber hose). Shakes like crazy, so I might try a bath of cleaning fluid for some sub-ultrasonic degreasing.
