I went to the company below to have my 'pub co2' bottle refilled with argoshield (for £10) and found that they have started renting out proper bottles. When I compare them to BOC etc, I realised just how cheap they are. The prices are for either argoshield or pure argon, and are for 10 litre bottles. Deposit on bottle - £25.75, 3 year rental £38.99, each gas refil £22.50, and they are filled to 137 bar. The 5 litre bottle - the one that I went for, as it holds the same amount of gas as the pub type bottle (as the fill pressure is higher) costs £15.75 for the deposit, £29.50 for the 3 year rental and £12.50 for each refil.

Yes I've got in touch with Mark Maynard. He confirms these prices, and also notes that he would only refill bottles which are sound.

To refill a CO2 pub gas bottle, we can note that it's designed to store liquid CO2, which liquifies at 67bar. I can't believe they would make the bottle take much more pressure, as it's unecessary for that purpose. Hence I doubt Maynards would refill these pub gas bottles to more than about 67bar, which for 10lt means £10 for 670lt of gas (1.5p/lt). Hmm, not bad I think?

The 10lt 'proper' bottles amount to 1370lt of gas, which at £100 all-told (starting a 3yr rental scheme) amounts to 7.2p/lt. Even at £28.8 for a refill, this works out at 1.9p/lt. Strange, looks like refilling a pub gas bottle to 67bar is cheaper than renting a 'proper' bottle? How come?

Straight CO2 is always the cheaper option but many will agree that the quality of your weld is sacrificed thus requiring more time & extra grinding discs!!
