How dothey compare to nice ones?
I bought some cheap thin disc once, and they are a world away from good quality ones.

Dunno yet, the guy I spoke to reckons they are as good as his top quality ones and some pros have started ordering them. I have ordered a couple of boxes and will inform the thread of my verdict. Also Derek who works there gave me loads of sound advice so I think they know their stuff.

Thats about what I pay for a quality disc, I have had cheap discs that disintegrate before they even touch the job, before i buy now I always ask for samples, never tried these so cant comment, pheonix are not a bad one, sait very good, same story with flap discs as well.

I've tried a variety of cheap types and makes, usually off Ebay, and never had one break up one me yet. I'm not sure if I've even noticed a different in performance either.

Maybe I'm not working them hard enough.....

I have tried a few different brands. Now have a box of 100 3" ebay-special disks that cost me about $25. Most work ok, they do wear fast. Some wear uneven and have to be scrapped. They all have at least some vibration. Did have one explode. Put a bruise on my belly

The expensive ones (Huskey) last longer and do not get unbalanced. They don't seem to cut as well though. But only come in packs of 3 or 5.

I do have a safety procedure. If the grinder falls over and hits the wheel with any force, I step on it to force me to use another. At $0.25/ea no big deal.

I do keep a few of the nicer ones around. They do cut smoother.

Mostly I cut stainless steel, that works them a bit harder than mild steel, I always buy the Inox graded discs whatever I'm cutting, Recently trialled some Eastern European crap discs that turned to dust as soon as they touched the material, you get what you pay for with abrasives, its a very competitive market, I wouldn't want to be selling them.

You get what you pay for I guess, in the past I have bought cheap hacksaw blades that are blunt after a couple of strokes, wire strippers that couldn't strip and spirit levels that weren't... level. A bad craftsman always blames his tools so perhaps best to rule that excuse out of the equation.

I find pushing them a bit too hard increases wear many times more than you'd expect. Let the disc cut its own way and it lasts far, far longer.

To tell the truth I was a none believer in 1mm discs when I first heard of them, assuming they'd be worthless as they were so thin and weak, so I ploughed on (literally) with old fashioned 3mm wheels for ages.....

Those discs are chinese, we have tested them, they last about half the time of a quality disc, so yes cheap and for the diy man they may be ok, we supply the market with a Pferd disc, German made quality disc

i just get the Makita or Norton 1.0mm discs from screwfix. usually work outr about a qud a disc or so. fairly good quality

I've got some Rhodius (sp?) discs I bought off eBay after a recommendation on here, and they work well.

Try this ebay seller smith_and_arrow the 1mm discs they sell are fast cutting and long lasting.

Mine arrived in the post today and they come in a nice re-useable zip up case. Perfick for Cd's etc. Just waiting for the rainy season to end then I can test em out.
