chatter in a telescopic shaft

I have a shaft going from transmission to axle on a old Wheel loader, 6ton wheel loader. As wheel loader is articulated its a telescopic shaft, by telescopic I mean shaft travels in and out 1-2cm approx according as steering wheel is turned.

anyway after many hrs and many years I think its beginning to chatter, thus I may be trying to source a new shaft.

Anyone know for such an application what the tolerance should be between the splines on the male and female ends of a shaft.

The splines will slide in/out as much as required by the design for the machine, 1-2cm doesn't seem excessive to me provided everything else is in spec...

Possible problems could be:-

The splines worn or are the U/Joints partly damaged/seized?

I'd be inclined to remove the prop shaft and do an on the bench inspection/rebuild........

or

Possibly the pivots for the articulation worn, bushes/main frame ovalled/damaged/pivot pin worn?

How often does it see a grease gun????

grease every ~100-150hrs, im good at that. u joints in good order, they get greased too. Last greasing was 12th of March.

thanks to good greasing articulation joint, bushes frame etc are all in VGC.


with handbrake applied there is ~6-8degree of rotational movement between male and female parts of the shaft. - this is the play on the splines.

6-8degree calculated as follows.
Diameter of the end yoke on shaft=100mm
With handbrake applied I can rotate end yoke 6mm. - this is the play on the splines.

Angle through which shaft turns. sin-1(6/50) =6.78degrees

This probably won't help but.....

I remember reading some article in a land rover magazine or forum, whereby some bloke had similar issues, the replacement parts were stupid money, so he ground down some hardened nails to shim it.

Another option is assume old and worn and continue using it until the inevitable, and start searching replacement parts, although probably anything second-hand will probably be equally knackered.

I'd continue using it and look for replacement parts.

A photo of said shaft might help.

Is this chatter from the shaft splines o emanating from axels/transmission?it all goes into bind on the turn so could be anywhere.

with the machine stopped and engine running, when you pull up the handbrake it can start chattering wont do it every time but put your hand on the shaft in question and it stops

parts like that would prob be from one of their trucks
things like steering joints and even brake drums can and often r from commercial vehicles....
it's not diff to cut and weld new or used splines.....
In the uk there r company's that will repair or remanufacture prop shafts......
depending on the size, the male and female splines r avaiable from agri /tractor supply depot's....
when I lived in France we always were repairing shafts.....u'd be suprised how many types and sizes there are....
all available cut to length or by the meter....
