Yes .. me dad always told me " when you jump start a car or start with a low battery on a cold morning (put it in neutral) and then press the clutch down "...I always press the clutch down when starting anything ...does anyone else automatically do this?When I have shared cars or vans in the past I was often nagged about leaving them in gear ...

I push the clutch down.
The transmission grease get thick and sticky when cold.
In the winter, it is sometimes cold enough around here, you can drive for a few blocks in neutral.

I used to do that but this one has a DSG gearbox, anyway it's sound now, it charged up very quickly and started no bother at all this morning with the car iced up.

I put the clutch pedal down on everything when i start it

Probably use more starting it then running at idle will put back in, especially with head lights on
