I appreciate I am using opaque in the vernacular but I did not realise I needed to submit a scientific dissertation on the optical properties of matter. That is why I specifically referred to opaque and "opaqued" in relation to the window film industry and Google, both of whom would happily argue the point.

There is only one definition of 'opaque' and that is the correct one. It does not transmit light.

If it transmits some light, it's translucent - if it transmits all light, it's transparent.

I don't care what the window tinting industry says, they're wrong.

Cool. So let's say there's a film out there. Some sort of art house nonsense and the OP wants to find it. It's about life in the ghetto of NYC.

I happen to know it so I tell the OP that he needs to search Google for "The Colour Black". This will bring up all the information about the film he needs to know. Same goes for Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.org.

You're only 'right' in that you concur with the socially accepted wrongness.

You'd also have to disambiguate with the film - "the colour, black" is one thing but "the color black" is something else entirely.

But, a film title isn't really comparable. Think "cloudy with a chance of meatballs". A trade name (or any name come to think of it) needn't bear any resemblance to the properties of the item it is naming.

The argumentative point is that if I were to ask a company to supply me with opaque film I would expect it to be opaque. I would reasonably expect to apply it to a window and have zero light transmission. In exactly the same way if I were to request translucent film I would reasonably expect a percentage of light to be passed.

If the respective films failed to deliver that then under (what I think still is) the trade descriptions act, I would still be right and my complaint based on that failure would be upheld.

Just because someone decides to capitulate to the ignorant masses, it doesn't make them or the masses correct. It's not my fault people don't listen at school, so why should I make allowances for the stupidity/ignorance of others?

That's what you're looking for.

If you asked a window company to supply you with opaque film, you would need to define your requirement because you might easily end up with something which in the physics world is in fact translucent or obscured. The reason being that "obscured" is not a physics term, it is entirely subjective

No it doesn't mean that <in this context>, it merely means not transparent. Frosted glass is "opaqued" in the terminology used by the window film world.

I don't like the "ignorant masses" comment which I find both fatuous and self aggrandising. You're no genius mate and among those "ignorant masses" will be skills and knowledge you yourself will be entirely ignorant of. Words do change and in this case the strict definition of opaque is commonly used in the window film world to mean a type of translucency which obscures vision.

A window film may have a "title" in the same way a movie film does and in this case the phrase is "opaqued". In the paint world there are shades of grey, tinted blacks, off white etc. etc. If this upsets your delicate sensibilities then you should retire to your own little world where everything is described according to it's material, physical properties. Otherwise you'll end up having a heart attack every time some "ignorant fool" mentions peanut butter which of course is neither made from nuts nor contains any butter.

Why make allowances for the stupidity/ignorance of others? Because otherwise, you are merely demonstrating your own ignorance of the way things are.
