Changing a cpu

as the mobo seems to be a standard matx changing it should be easy enough.



everything else just plugs in..... usually

most programs will just stay on the hard disks, windows will complain & probably want a repair/reinstall... only potential issue is if it is tied to the mobo bios/serial no. in which case it will tell you this is not a dell pc & it may not install, then you need a new copy of windows

i would say that windows will definitely want a reinstall if the mobo is changed and because of that you wont be able to save installed programs unless you have the install disc / files

If you're planning on changing the mother board and cpu i would suggest getting a new case and psu, that case you currently have is micro atx most after market motherboards are bigger than that, system builders normally use barely adequate psu's that sometimes have proprietary wiring that wont work with other motherboards.

As for the files and pictures either back them up on removable media or just buy a new hard disk and leave everything on the old hard disk, as for programs your going to have to reinstall them same with windows, so make sure you have the disks for them or can download them from the web, there are backup programs that can copy over all your stuff to a new build but they cost money and you can do it yourself for free

depends on the OS & version snoopy..... some will recognise a change & accept it as long as it can boot then reinstall the drivers it needs... can be a pita & a little lumpy to start with, others just say this is OEM, & not compliant ..go away

retail versions of windows, xp onwards wont accept major changes

Thanks lewis but i might as well buy a totally new computer if i have to replace everything anyway, i hoped that a motherboard or cpu swap would be enough.

Did you investigate your running processes, startup programs etc? I cleaned up my step-daughter's laptop last week because she said it was 'worn out and slow' and it was right back up to scratch afterwards. A good cleanup and defrag was all it needed.

i agree a fresh install is the best thing if you have the restore disc

It was always slow from the first day i had the thing, my old laptop died during the final week i had to do a desertation for an engineering degree course i was doing. The lappy died and i had to go and buy a new computer the same evening. It was the best i could afford but i have never been happy with its performance.
It keeps freezing during the first 20-30 minutes after start up and always has since day 1.

Quite correct Snooper look how many times you get the message reactivate windows when nothings been changed except update drivers.

Got an ongoing problem with a HP Lappy, changed mobo for a 6910 I want XP on dual boot partitioned off ready etc, wont have it but no prob installing win7 32bit. Its an HP thing and it wont beat me.

If going to build choose good brand names such as Assus even better Gigabyte mobos, same with ram personally fond of Corsair Dominator.
If want longetivity a good brand psu such as Enermax, Corsair etc, the root od all evils.
