Changed from 6mm to 8mm

Just thought that i would mention on here,For the past year i had been using 6mm wire with gas and i had not been really happy about the welding,In the past month or so i decided to change to 8mm and what a difference it has made to my welding the knurling on the 8mm side of the feed rollers let the wire go threw nicely the welding looks the business.You may say that it also depends on what I'm welding ! Its just usual things i needed to weld a broken bracket about 1/4 inch thick no prob.Now if i did car panels i would probably change back to 6mm ..But i think from now on will stick to 8mm so any newbies having problems welding try 8mm wire/tips.

Must be a hell of a wire feed you have to pull either 6 mm or 8 mm 'wire' - I'd call that rod !!!!

I think you've lost your decimal point somewhere - perhaps it's on the floor?

I use .8 for everything and always have. My present welder the Minarc 180 is designed and programmed to use it but will take .6 or 1mm but I haven't tried them.

Never used 0.6mm. The stuff I weld never calls for it so 0.8mm is the norm for me.
I used 1.0mm before, but that was only for welding thick aluminium.

I only ever really use 1.0+1.2 for mig and mag. And 1.2 with fcaw... Works fine for me... :-)

I have the Kemppi min arc 180 too,Even tho' the synergic programme is set up for 0.8mm, I use 0.6mm for very thin stuff, the machine handles it beautifully and the power/wire feed still matches with no further adjustments.just a slight adjustment to the material thickness on the display,

i find i'm better on body pannels with 0.8, i can get good penitarion and neat welds with the 0.8 and littel distortion. 0.6 i just get frustrated quick

I seem to only use 1.2mm, But on that note I don't do very much thin stuff with the mig, I tend to tig anything fine like that....

I prefer to use 0.6 on metal thinner than 1mm.
and 0.8 for the thicker stuff.
That said it depend whats on the reel at the time as well.

Just plan the jobs around the wire.

i run 2 welders one permantly has 1mm in it and that gets used for neraly everything thats not car, the other welder runs 0.8 i use that on car and light fab. that said i have welded cars up with 1mm wire as thats the welder that was closest at the time.

I'll have to get a small roll of .6 and have a go just out of curiosity now. I've been welding my scooter panels and they are very thin, like .8mm in the good bits and the welder has coped right down to setting material thickness at .7mm and still put a run down after the pieces were tacked in.
