change wheels

Hi all , what change wheel will I need for my Grayson lathe to give me a very slow feed on the saddle, it is to improve the finish
on the work, will it be one with a high no of teeth or a low one,just the gears that came with the lathe fitted, sorry for a question that may be obvious but I am not the sharpest pin in the cushion,

How long is a piece of string? It depends on which end you start from, and in this case it depends on how your banjo is arranged. a picture of the geartrain that's there at the moment is needed, and a picture of any spare change wheels the lathe came with.

You want a high ratio from leadscrew to spindle:

Leadscrew - Biggest gear
1st shaft - Small gear meshed with leadscrew, and a big gear.
2nd shaft - Small gear meshed with 1st shaft, and a big gear.
3rd shaft - both small gears. One mesh with 2nd shaft, other mesh with idler/spindle - which are usually also small gears.


To get better finish make sure cutter is sharp and has a radius instead of sharp corner. HSS use oil but carbide dont bother, it likes to be dry.

Ok, no change wheels with the lathe , can't do a pic at the moment, the feed rate seems quite fast, I have put a small flat on the tool to get a better finish which improved matters but seems to be still too fast, will put pics up when I can

Ok, can I assume that swapping the wheels I have got fitted around can give a slower feed rate ?
Would be nice cos it would be free, not too fussed at this stage re thread cutting, thanks
