Change of Tig Torch

Due to my physical problems I would like to change my tig torch from a wp17 to an adjustable one and came across THIS which I really like, but I think there is going to be one stumbling block, am I right in thinking that unless I am using a pedal then this torch will not work, am pretty sure I have answered my own question but hey...boys out there that know far more about this than me...

Why not simply cable tie or tape a switch to the torch handle?
That would then be a stand alone torch without the need for a pedal.

I did think about it, but sooner or later they end up shearing off......

I'd try a flexhead first. They are less than 15quid. Just bear in mind, they do not last for ever, the core is made from a copper coil, this over time will work harden, causing it it fail in the end.

It's just the American way Sean. Foot pedal is the 'default' way over there so torch switches are always a seperate deal. As said just add a momentary button etc and away you go. I saw those torches being demonstrated by Jodie on "welding tricks and tips " he seemed quite impressed! As already mentioned,a seperate button switch is a quick and cheap solution to your problem Sean,

On the other hand you would need to go through 14 flexheads before you exceeded the cost of one of the posh ones. That's a hell of a lot of welding fella

I sold some CK stuff before. I have one of the slide controls here that will never get used. If its any use to you let me know.
It was a sample piece I used to show potential customers. I hope it works and is not just a blank with no guts in it.

Dave, yeah I know what you mean, but I just realised I left out due to my arthritis its also a pita gripping normal sized torches, the lorch at work is a nightmare, while I was doing my c&g at college few yrs back I would come home and ice my hand up to reduce the pain and swelling.


Wyn, I saw that thanks, I was looking at the difference between shipping on from the states and paying vat and delivery from Rapid.

Also fellas, what's the deal with adding a switch to a stand alone torch ? Do they come complete ? Or do you have to start chopping wires and re- soldering microswitches and plugs and stuff ?

Seano, as per pm, this is what I've got.

Rubbish pic but you'll get an idea.
LH is the variable slide as in the link in prev post and is a clip on type.
RH is a std micro switch but with a velcro strap.
The housings are the same so switches could be swapped over.

The slide one needs the trigger wires soldered to it. I could do that for ya and leave some cable out of the housing.

Sean, I think the button switches can come with a length of smallish 2 core wire,just have to have a plug to suit the machine on the other end,I,m pretty sure it's only a low voltage required, I soldered a couple of pins to the wires and plugged them into the correct holes,,

Just worked out after a perusal of the starparts torch catalogue that I have a wp17 torch with an ergo handle fitted, so if I remove the handle, fit the torch with a flex head and a flat switch boot, and then remove the stupid heavy cable sleeve I should end up with a slimline lightweight torch......simples
