Change in career

Hi,

I currently work in the insurance industry and was looking for a complete change in career to something that stimulates me. I have been interested in becoming a welder for some time now, with no previous experience, but wanted advice on the reality of such a career change and the job prospects.

I am getting married next year so it is pretty important that I hold a job down. I have been looking at welding courses near to me and some of these really interest me, plus they are evening courses which is helpful.

My main questions are these:
If I was to take such a career decision, am I likely to find work with no previous experience in welding? (which all job adverts seem to ask for)
Apprenticeships look few and far between at the moment...is it possible to even get onto one?

If I thought that there was job opportunities for somebody who wants to learn the trade, I would have no hesitation getting myself enrolled on a course. However, I just can't see that from the research I have done...If anybody else can tell me otherwise, please enlighten me!!

Doosan Babcock & Alstom run yearly apprenticeship schemes.

I am based in Dudley.

I have had a look at those apprenticeships and they do look promising. Do you know whether these are paid and how much travelling is involved?

I have no idea I'm afraid. They're good companies though and the training will be to a high standard with good job prospects I'd imagine.

I am currently contacting Alstom to enquire about TIG welding courses and doing my EN287 coding with them. They appear to have a good reputation.
