Chalk lines on the ground

Ok so I’m a bit of dumb ass when it comes to proper fabricating so please don’t slate me for asking this, but was does it mean when you see a fabricator drawing chalk lines on the shop floor when they’re making something?

Invaluable. Good example of this are the safety hoops we used to make for fire escapes at the MS where I worked as a nipper. These were beaten circular by hammering them cold between two blocks set apart on the floor, the returns back to the ladders were heated. If it wasn't for the chalk lines on the floor there would never been two the same, with the chalk lines on the floor as a template fifty odd feet of these would be ping perfect to the eye.

chalk on the floor to me , means youve an old hand on the job , and all will be good ,
it means keep quiet and watch , then you may learn something
it means in years to come it may be you thats wise enough to be holding the chalk line.

Watching the old sign writers put a chalk line on a door or a big sign was interesting , took a long time for me to work out how they pinged it without a loop in the line

Measure with a tape, mark with chalk, hammer to fit, paint to match.

A mate drew one of these on the toilet floor of our local pub, along with the name of the guy who passed out there the weekend before...... then everyone kept quiet until the lad finally went for a leak

No it was a crushed chest so body would have still been human shaped.

Drawing something full size on the floor helps greatly with working out proportions & sizes & seeing if your design will actually work.

We used to check ploughs for distortion by putting a long straight edge against the side of the shares and drawing a chalk line forwards from each share. If the lines were parallel it was fine, otherwise you'd know which leg had twisted.
