Chainsaw problems

Hi all

The work has a husky saw 20" bar. New chain on it. I think it needs a bar.

I also think it's not oiling the chain? Chain not running particularly free as after a small bit of cutting telegraph pole. The bar would burn the hand off u.

The boss says the chain will slacked off. I have my doughts Oh and the brake doesn't work.
I haven't been working the that long. A bit of maintainence and it would be a good saw.

I am by no means a expert mind you

As far as I know running a saw commercially without a chain brake is illegal. Chain oiler pump will probs be knacked, you can usually get repair kits for them, and a sprocket nose bar will increase chain life a bit.

Just at the farm. It must have been broke a while. That is now excuse though tbh. The bar is done. Think he just turns round bak and forth

If it hasn't been serviced recently and is being used commercially and the boss won't pay, don't use it...

If you or anyone else has an accident with it your insurance will be null and void, they'll ask for regular servicing receipts and proof of regular maintenance...

No chain brake - don't work it. I bet there's no PPE either. Re not oiling, check the oil ways are clean, oil pump could be full of crap too

PPE won't protect you if the saw kicks back with no brake straight through your skull

I have got the basics about bar and chain etc. from a cousin that's a tree surgeon. I have got proper helmet and saw gloves.
I know it needs a wee tighten during the day.

I was more asking to see if I was correct in what I thought.

He thinks bars fine even though it's hot. Oiler is OK . It's been parked up need a good service.

You'll want a pair of pants bought as well. Again, my saw is old enough to not have a kickback brake but commercially I wouldn't be using one that didn't, and I certainly wouldn't be supplying my own ppe either. Refuse to use it, being on a farm is no excuse for poor maintainance

You need trousers too. If you cut into your leg you've got 4 minutes if you hit the femural artery!

Just to add to PDG's post, from the HSE website:

Chainsaws have the potential to cause horrific injuries. By law, chainsaw operators must have received adequate training relevant to the type of work they undertake.

They are also required to wear appropriate chainsaw protective clothing whenever they use a chainsaw.

This is true, relevant training should be undertaken, IIRC CS30 Which is/was "crosscutting and stacking with maintenance" should be the lowest training obtained, for each operator, unless felling is required, in a professional environment.

There is no mercy in a chainsaw. The average injury involves a lot of stitches. If your boss thinks the saw is alright to use in that condition let him use it.

And when a moving chain hits you it doesn't cut; it takes lots of small chunks out of you very quickly so not even a clean cut, then there is the wood and oil it deposits in the wounds.

Remember seeing some chain brake testing several years ago and back then the chain would make over 100 nibbles before the brake stopped the chain.

No chain brake - don't work it, no risk of kick back !
