got given a zenoah top handled chainsaw about 10yr old
and cant get it to start?
what are these chainsaws like? any good?
and dose anybody know of some tricks to get them to start?
Never actually heard of that make, it could be numerous things to be honest, make sure theres fresh petrol in it and the mixture is correct, at 10 years old the compression could be gone so it might need new rings piston etc.
Try the petrol first and make sure choke is working and renew the spark plug and make sure you have a spark.
Put fresh oil/petrol mix in as above with a new plug and shake the saw vigorously in all directions even upside down then try a few pulls. Does the throttle have a half stop to hold it open while starting? If so engage the half stop and give it a bit less than full choke while you try it and make sure it is securely held down not waving it about in mid air while you pull.
I have a Zenoah engine in an R/C plane (62cc). They are good engines, reliable and start easily.
If it has been sitting, the fuel pump will probably be stuck. It is just a flat piece of rubber. Usually just taking it apart and cleaning it will fix it.
Rebuild kits are available. Usually easier to get the model # of the carb (usually Walbro) to find kits for it.
1st thing i'd check for is compression, make sure its switched off, take out the plug, place your thumb over the plug hole and pull the pullcord, if your thumb is forced off the hole there is enough compression if not it could need rings or worst case a new piston and pot.
If you have compression check next for spark, switch on and put spark plug into the cap and lead. Place the plug onto the alloy head and pull the pullcord, hold the rubber cover while doing this.
Check for spark first. Pull the plug and leave it on the wire and have a buddy pull the rope. You can lay the plug on the edge of the head and it should spark when pulling the rope. Its easier with 2 people. If spark check out the fuel line it could be rotted off or sucked shut for the new gas formulas. The carb could be dirty as Shenion said, they get shellac in them and gum everything up. I have a lot of 30-40 year old saws i run...Bob
thats one hell of a bar on that
i havent had time to do investigate anything yet
ive pulled the plug out but it is in such an okward place the cover covers it i cant see if its sparking so i need to pull the cover off and look to see and then ill have to investigate further if it dosent start
thanks

One thing I forgot to mention is if it has been run on regular oil, the plug insulator will probably be shorted. I had a buddy that had to replace the plug each year after it sat over the winter. I had him switch to synthetic oil and no more problems.
I clean them with a bead blaster and they are like new.
thanks for the answers
i got it running cleand the plug put some petrol down the head and it wouldn't start yesterday after i diid that went to try today and started first pull haven a clue how tthat made the difference but its going and its a nice little chainsaw
thanks caz
if the saw has been stood for a while with fuel in it, it is quite possible that the rubber diaphragm is stuck down, I always find that when I start my garden machines in the spring a gentle heat from a warm air blower does the trick, do all the usual checks change plug and re-fill with fresh fuel.
