Chainsaw advice wanted

Had a prob with the saw again this week (last prob was the spring in the clutch going but had to fit a complete clutch as you cant get just the spring). The chain & bar have over heated (before you all say it yes its got cutter bar oil in it). I was cutting a few large logs of oak in to sections to split. The bar is a 14" one & the logs were 12" so it was working very hard plus the chain could have done with being a bit sharper but its was still wizzing through all the other types of wood. I had only just reversed the bar about a week ago so had expected it to last a bit longer than that. I have ordered a new bar (Major owen to the rescue again at a very good price) which will be here next week. My question is can I re profile the old bar to remove the burs & chips? After doing so I think I would only use the dodgy chain as I dont want to wreck a good one. Its realy only got to do enough wood to last till the replacement arrives. I have also bitten the bullet & bought a 51cc 20" bar one so I can fell bigger trees easier. That too should arrive next week.

I have never had a bar wear out. My old 14" is almost 20 years old and bar is still fine. Don't know what you mean by burrs and chips in the bar. The only wear I see is the groove getting wider and not as deep. I have never needed to replace the bar and I have worked it hard.

I did upgrade to a Poulan Pro 50cc/20" bar last year. Nice machine and light. I bought another and the engine is now in one o my R/C planes

Nah chain was same as usual. After more checking the bar is bowed which I think happend last time I felled a tree as it did get piched as it went over. I guess it was a combination of the extra hard wood, a slightly dull chain, the bowed bar & that i had already done a quite a few cuts in hard wood so it had got hot.

Yeh I know but as I run 4 chains in rotation this one can go to the back of the que & get pro sharpened / re hardened.

That means the bar needed changing ages ago. The burs are the result of the metal wearing (hence the wider groove). If you run your finger nail over the edge of the bar you will feel a lip on the edge. Ah well the old bar has only got to do a couple of days worth till the replacement arrives.

Sounds like you can use what you got until a better one comes in. My old 14" had a manual pump for oil. I used to have to stop and let my thumb rest. I oiled the **** out of it, one reason it lasted so long.

I did not do much oak with it. For that I would call my buddy with his 22", 62cc Stil. Went though like butter.

I always sharpened the chain myself and took great care not to overheat it. On the smaller units, buying a new chain is cheaper than having someone sharpen and temper it. Also, I have heard people have them sharpened by a so called professional and it does not cut straight as the angles are not right.

Yeah, as the bar get worn, the chain gets sloppy. If you bent yours it would not track and wear even faster. It also depends on the quality of the bar. A better one will be stronger and will have a pulley at the end.

heck, the bar is shot, the chain is worn, you will not lose anything by using it until the new one comes.

The 20" will be real nice. On my 14" you had to work hard to keep the chain from overheating (go real slow.) A longer bar/chain will run much cooler and last longer.

I've got a stihl ms250 with a 15" bar. If it's getting constant use, I'll turn the bar everyday and file the bar every few days. So long so you don't hit any sh*te in the wood, chain usually lasts a few days before it wants re-sharpening. I think the bar is getting kinda close to needing replaced, you usually get about 3 chains to 1 bar

Once had it sharpened on a machine (for free), and f*ck me the teeth came out rougher than a bottle of cheap vodka!


Oh and if the chain's overheated you may find it near impossible to sharpen, as the metal might be tougher than before

Well I have smoothed it our using the bench gringer follwed by the rotary wet stone I use to sharpen butchers knifes. I also retrued it slightlyto take out tyhe worst of the bow. It is now working ok & I have just cut up another oak log with no problems.
