Central Heating Problem

one other thing if some idiot without knowing there system that they have

has fitted all rads with trv vales it will cause the water to auto pump direct into the tank as its got no where to go but through that overflow pipe

when the rads temp hits there set they shut down leaving the pumped water no where to go as normally they can use the bathroom rad and return back to the boiler therefore shutting the boiler down

Today I can proudly say I’m not the idiot. Nothing has been touched on the system since I’ve lived here for about 8 years… except the pump was swapped a year or two ago, and it was set to #3 (I was that idiot) but now set to #1

Well, I should’ve looked at my own photos more closely. I think I found the cause of the symptom.

The symptom:

I’ll get the float valve swapped and report back.

if the tank ball valve is dribberling all of the time you want a new ball valve washer

ball valve too high

water well and truly over the overflow pipe

and whats in the picture

one other thing make sure that tank is lagged it can freeze up there in a loft and support your overflow pipe as well

Thank you, that’s the pipe that I thought it traced back to. (Painted silver out the top of the separator).
I’m guessing it’s not user serviceable?

That small copper cylinder WILL be blocked and causing all your problems, get a plumber to chop it out

I think you have more than one problem. If the ball valve is dripping replacing it is better than re washering it, they are cheap enough, your over flow doesn't look to be working as well as it should but I suspect the pumping over is caused by a blockage. It is a common problem on open vented systems fitted with air separators or just close coupled with fittings and occurs where the cold feed enters the system see pic

New float valve is in. That’s stopped the dribble. I’ll keep an eye on the primary vent over the next couple of days but as it stands it’s not overflowing!
