celly spray cans

as I don't have access to a spray booth and at the moment don't have a compressor or spray guns I have been looking at spray cans for my project bike. I have found the colour I want and can get it in celly gloss finish.

is it any different to spraying 2k from a gun?

I will be going back to bare metal in order to weld, then primer and paint. im looking for gloss as it will be easier than basecoat then clear in my limited space and don't want to start using 2k without an air feed mask

have used ebay sourced acrylic to spray the mirrors and parking sensors for my megane and they came in the same can, colour was good but needed clear as it was metallic, I reckon for a quick job to get the bike on the road this should give a reasonable finish?

I hate spray cans I don't think the fan from them is any good but if that's all you can use then you are limited

I have just edited the op with a link. it has adjustable fan on the can and the last lot I used weren't too bad in that respect. it will only be a zephyr tank and an r1 seat unit I am spraying and it hasn't got to be showroom perfect, just good enough that once its hardened I can polish it a bit and it will look decent

Viz top tip, in the past when I've used spray cans I've left them standing in a bowl of warm water say around body temperature for a while before using. Then shake vigourously and use. Gives quite reasonable results. Also clear coat lacquer in cans isn't too bad either, repaired many a chipped allow wheel with this stuff

Should have said, if your working outside warm up the metal with a hair dryer and see if you can find a portable tanning lamp, it's great for drying paint if waived around evenly around the job

I will be spraying inside my shed with 2 1200W halogen heaters on, closest thing to a heated booth I can get, but with a sheet over the bench there is nothing that can be damaged with paint in there so it will have to do for now.

I have sprayed quite a bit of 2k from a gun, and sprayed a bit of acrylic from a can to do bits on my car but never sprayed celly before so just want to know really if its any different?

Just out of interest why not go with a 1k acrylic paint - finish off with the upol uv smart clear aerosol. Would have thought that would give a much more durable finish.

haven't fully decided on the paint yet, just did a browse and found a lot of celly gloss available so thought I would go with that.

I don't mind using acrylic at all but finding 7f lime green in 1k in a spray can is harder than finding celly in the same colour in a can, and to be honest I will probably end up re-spraying it as soon as I get a compressor and an air fed mask

haha I must be tired, I just flicked back onto my search for paint and realise I spelt green as greek...probably why I couldn't find much in the way of paint.

its not cheap though @15 quid a can for the Kawasaki colour or 25ish gets a can of colour and clear, but as I haven't got a lot to paint I suppose its not too bad

thanks. just weighed it all up and im gonna go with 1k. I know its more expensive but it should give a better finish. once the bike is here I still have to weld the tank up, get the frame bare so I can strip the paint off that and spray it (it was brush painted with some thing resembling poster paint in yellow before my father bought it and we could never be bothered to strip it all just to paint the frame), will be going black on the frame and sub frame (probably metallic just for fun), green panels and tank, or maybe red, not entirely sure yet, wheels to match and black callipers. everything else will be polished as the remainder is mostly aluminium. also gotta shorten the exhaust downpipes, find new speedo and rev counter, new brake pads, service the engine, new chain, wheel bearings, clutch and brake levers, bit of welding to do on the frame, smooth the rest of the welds, make a plenum chamber and fit it, a bit of wiring needs doing, new battery, fit an alarm (never be too careful around here) relocate the choke (doesn't fit the frame on this bike and is 4" too short to mount on the bars), get the engine checked and registered with dvla, insure tax and mot it and then maybe it will be ready for next summer...or it will be ready for winter and i'll end up taking it all apart again after I get loads of ideas during this build lol

You can get the 2k epoxy primer in aerosols and a good quality mask + goggles should be fine with that (unlike the top coat 2k aerosols which you def need air feed mask).

I did a couple of corroded rear footrest hangers on a 600 Ninja last year, the owner supplied the grey metallic paint and lacquer bought from RS Bike Paints. I had problems getting an even finish with the metallic as the nozzle would occasionally spit leaving dark spots so I ended up dusting the top coat on in one continuous spray from a distance. The satin lacquer they supplied was very thin and ran easily and needed very light coats but in the end the colour match and finish was very good.

why not ask at a freindly bodyshop if they would blast them for you , we used do it for a good drink which might work out as cheap as getting all the stuff then having a sub standard job

as for the orig question...chances are it will dry faster and theres a increased chance of a reaction due to the high thinners content

that involves a friendly body shop first. The only proper body shop near me used to be my fathers main competitor for spraying so i doubt they would be too happy to do my paint for been tokens lol
