Cellulose thinners

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a 5L can of thinners to user for general degreasing before painting and also to thin some paint before spraying. Roughly what price should I expect to pay? I like to know if I'm getting ripped off!

And can anyone recommend somewhere in Carlisle to buy it?

I got 5 litres of anti bloom thinners off Ebay for about £15 including P&P, don't know if thats good or bad but a lot of spots don't sell it now due to the tighter regs.

Hi,

You're better off using panel-wipe than celly thinners for degreasing prior to paint.

Firstly, as the name suggests, it's made for the job, and secondly, unless you're degreasing absolutely bare metal prior to shooting even the first coat of primer, chances are that celly thinners will dissolve whatever paint or primer's on there, which won't be helpful Panel-wipe's cheaper too IIRC.

Can't think of anywhere specific in Carlisle TBH, but I bet there's a paint factors up on Kingstown.

As above panel wipe for wiping panels, the clue is in the name I get cheap thinners for about £6 for 5 litres for gunwash and primer but good top coat thinner is £8 for 1 litre. I can't recommend anywhere in Carlisle but paint suppliers are generally similar so just shop around.

Ta for the comments, it will be for degreasing bare metal, I should have explained properly I've got a VW camper which I'm rebuilding and the parts I'm painting at the moment are either chemically stripped back to bare and the rust removed using various methods (engine compartment) or the under body parts which I've cleaned using a wire wheel in an angle grinder followed by phosphoric acid.

I hadnt thought about using panel wipes and I'll definately get some for cleaning the external panels as I hadnt thought about the cellulose wrecking the paint already there..

Panel WIPE is a liquid, like (ish...) thinners.
Panel WIPES are tack-rags/tack-cloths.
Not the same thing.
Ideally, you need to use both, but the stuff you were asking about is panel WIPE, which is why Pedro priced it in litres

its totally free in outer space the problem is finding someone there that stocks it ive heared the clangers cant find any, mr spoon from button moon used the he had in his rocket and wallace and gromet could only find cheese

One thing worth noting is that there a cheap thinners and dearer thinners, I personally wouldn't use a cheap thinner in paint, i prefer to use a decent brand. Cheap thinner is great for cleaning guns but if you want a good paintjob use the good stuff. With paint products price usually reflects the quality.
Using thinner for cleaning is a no no, use the proper Panel Wipe

cheap thinners for gun cleaning has water added.
Seems ok to use in primer & gloss but wait till the first frost and you're wondering where all the micro blisters have come from.

Yup, been there, copped for that - spend a few bob and get it right first time, re-doing paint is a nightmare
