Cellulose over 2K

Hi all.

I've recently picked up a fibreglass GT6 bonnet for my Spitfire project. I believe the bonnet has been sprayed in a lovely shade of magenta! Spray job seems really well done and has a nice finish. I tried some thinners on a rag to see if it would affect the finish, but, it didnt, so I assume its 2k?

I'll be using cellulose paint over it, valencia blue. Now, I know 1k is generally safe going on over 2k but what is the process? Do I have to rough up the original 2k finish and prime as per usual? I was told that I should apply etch primer before the top coat??!

Me neither, I understood etch was for getting a bite into bare metal, not paint.

no need for etch unless its bare metal

you could paint straight over it if you want to, say 800 wet sand it until its all dull then straight on with the paint

or if theres defects then you could 600 it and put a couple of coats of primer on then sand that smooth and paint it

Is the bonnet painted or is it gel coat ?

Would the purple color affect the valencia going on top if I didnt prime? The bonnet is gel coated, or at least I assume it is. The wheelarches were kinda transparent, but the main body of the bonnet has a white coating on the outer faces.

what sort of colour is valencia ? if its a bright colour then a coat of white primer might help it

Valencia Blue is kind of a green/blue, depends on the lighting really. This will give you a good idea:

think id chance it myself straight on , or do you have any white gloss you could put on first ?

I think your bonnet is more Aubergine than Magenta . White primer is cheaper than top coat. Use plenty of panel wipe as it may have traces of release wax from moulding. It probably won't if it's been used before but better safe than sorry.

If that's a gelcoat finish you would be best to key and apply epoxy primer first

but yeah maybe sand a hidden corner until you go through to confirm its painted and not the gel coat finish

The current finish is a color that was applied, Triumph Magenta, the bonnet was taken off a car prior to me purchasing it.

The rest of the body tub (steel) will be epoxy primed and then grey highbuild before the top coat is applied. To try keep the tones the same should I not be applying the same color of primer to the bonnet or is the color deep enough to get away with it?

if youve got all the gear already then might as well sand it up and give it a coat of epoxy then , will give it a good base to work from

i think you could get away just painting it , but if you have all the stuff then do it all the same
