HI mate its not a good idea to use cellys on an engine block imo, i would go for a vht paint ,can pick them up from halfrauds or ebay

I doubt either would be much good, may last on the cooler parts of an engine but not where it gets good and hot, as mentioned VHT paint is the way to go...nothing worse than having to redo something...time and money consuming.

hammerite smooth enamel sprayed on is ideal 
its been on my 2.1ford engine and my norton barrels for 8 years cant get much hotter than that

I used ordinary B&Q enamel brushed on my cylinder block and it was still there 8 years later when I sold the car.

Seeing as Jaykays the only one on this thread who has actually been a professional painter and for decades, I'd have said he qualifies... (apologies Pedro if same applies).
Anyway.. other options, I've got a Car Plan celly engine lacquer. Says it's oil and heat resistant, but no idea what gives it that above normal celly topcoat. Used it on two engines, nice sheen, dries very fast, not the greatest for brushing being it dries so quick. Nice & cheap.
Also done 1k with 2k clear on blocks, but wouldn't do it on heads - exhaust port heat.

I haven't a clue but the block & heads don't get as hot as you would think. I've got engines here that were painted in 2 pack 10 years ago and the shine is still the same as when first done. I've seen engines painted in enamel and other types of paint but the shine never stays, the seem to dull down quite quickly.
I did a turbo Pinto engine in (smooth) Hammerite, I just didn't pain the flat sections around the exhaust ports on the head.
You have to remember, on a watercooled engine, the block and head will pretty much be below 120 DegC.
I was surprised more wasn't baked off my engine by radiated heat from the turbo/manifold (certainly used to make the paint on the bonnet go matt and rain steam off...)

Praps you ought to re-read the post - nowhere did I say 2k was no good! (!!! if you like). And I have used it on engines, one of which is somewhere on this forum.
But anyway the question was not about 2k, the guy doesn't want to use it.
