CD copying software

New computer blues.
We have just bought a new PC after our last died from creeping senility.
Anyway, CD copying.
Our old Nero software seems not to work with windowspoxyvista.
The computer has something called roxio installed which refuses to recognise the dvd drive. (we did have to have a new drive installed after the first one was faulty)
The Dell boy just spent almost a hour on the phone showing me how not to copy a disc.

There is heaps of free software out there, can anybody reccomend a freebie that wil work with vista

If you just want to do straight copies then Imgburn will work perfectly. It handles pretty much any image format and you can also build an image file (iso) from files on your pc.
The downside is that it doesn't let you create your own audio cd compilations but you can do that through windows anyway.
Is the new drive a different make/model to the old one? If so then that'll be why Roxio won't see it, it'll probably be an OEM version specific to the drive manufacturer.

Roxio that comes with PC is tied to the specific drive it was shipped with. I used to use it, but hated that you had to buy updates every time windows updated its software.

I use Nero here and it works well. The latest should work.

NERO and Vista

You can get Vista to run Older software by running in compatability mode. I.E. run a program by pretending to be XP, Win 98, or win 95. If you are struggling to instal old NERO then when inserting the disc cancel the instal. Use MY computer then right click on the disc drive and explore it. Find the SETUP file or INSTAL file. Right click on it and then click on Properties. Click on the Compatibility Tab and Then check the "Run this program in Compatibility mode" And chose the opperating system from the drop down menu that your old computer had that you know works with old NERO. Then click on Apply then OK. Now double click on the SETUP file and it should run and install NERO. When you run Nero after installing then Vist runs it as if in XP or 98 or whatever your choice was.
Try it.
I run several old programs this way instead of buying new.

Chunky get rid of that Roxio and all trace of it.
Nero dont exactly test their products, we do they then think about putting it right.
Nero 8 and 9 have been at best problematic for most, its the installer. Using 9 at mo, took several attempts installing one by one progies. Think the only thing that dont work is the TV integration but i have Terratec home cinema for that inc PVR etc.

Try Ashampoo burning studio, it's pretty simple to use and works with everything I think.

To robotstar5, it seem simple to use downloads fast and works. Death to Roxio.
We were using Nero 6 on the old senile PC, obviously an old out of date model.
Yet again thissite come up with the goodies.

I'm running Nero 7. 6 Stopped working on XP last year after some Windows updates. I would doubt it would ever work on Vista.

Good to hear you found something free. Roxio is banned here as they charge for near every update. Neo has been good, only nee to pay every few years.

If you just want to copy cd's of all types then clone cd is the tool for making backup copies old but still does the job and is free. If you want a burning cd software package then go for a free one like infrarecorder search google and look through soundforge for open source software (always free)
