CCTV Lighting Nuisance

My neighbour (who is renting) has installed a CCTV camera with a PIR light facing directly across my property along the side of my house towards my front gate, if I walk down my path the light is directly in my face as is the camera. I can find laws on cameras but not much on the lighting. Any ideas?

Their property is the downstairs flat of a converted house so the camera is also facing directly at the pathway to the upstairs flat, talk about inconsiderate. Ironic really as he came and asked about parking in the road when he moved in as he did not want to upset the neighbours!

The neighbour at the rear had one fitted a few months back and the light was shining in my living room, as a temporary measure (with the help of a laser level and tripod! ) I screwed an MDF board up on the fence as it was in my peripheral vision whilst watching TV. We had a chat and he fitted a small board on his soffit that excluded the light but this neighbours camera is going to need a complete cover or repositioning.

The light should not interfere with the legal activities of other boundary or effect the non protected area the cameras is recording.

It is the owner of the cameras responsibility to ensure that.
You have the right to have it moved.

Easiest would be to go see the neighbours and explain the situation then see if you can adjust so it’s not disturbing you

id ask if it bugs you id be more worried about the camera than light if some one wants to light my garden for security great

I understand your sentiments, I really do and it is quick and very effective.

The snag is, if you get caught there are a number of things that could happen, none of them good. You could go to jail (this has happened though I think it was suspended). You will certainly put airgun ownership front and centre and it is under threat already. You will cement "shooting" and by association shooters firmly in the minds of the loonies (the real loonies) as reckless out of control and need yet further "regulation".

I know, I know but forty years ago I would have likely taken care of this myself.

We have the same thing, my village is anti street lights, we are on the edge of Epping Forest and very close to London so most residents want to keep it as it is, four doors up a bungalow was sold for redevelopment, only made £550,000, the guy who bought it stripped everything green out of the garden, trees, hedges, shrubs, erected fences both sides of the 100 yard long but narrow rear garden and then put up a lights that are on all night, not pir, does not affect me that much but the people closer to him are not very happy! not sure what can be done, asking him is not really a viable option, been tried about blocking the footpath for days on end whilst building his new palace!

At the risk of pontificating, this is a national problem. Years ago, the beat bobby would have gone along and "had a word". Nowadays they arrive mob handed only when a loony goes on a rampage.
There is a saying: "from small acorns do large oaks grow" and this can easily be applied to many of today's social ills. Give an inch, take a yard springs to mind (not sure what the decimal equivalent is).

only after a quick cheak on google seams to be they do have rights so as to cover your garden as long as the camera is mainly pointing at there property and only gets yours in view as a viewing angle/how wide the camera lens is eg if more pointing at your property you can ask to get it pointed more on there property the only way to get it moved is if it encroches on your private life eg pointing at a windows/a door

dont take this as gospal only a quick cheak

lights i believe can come under a nuisance law lighting up your garden more then theres and turning on and off when its not required/ramdom switching on and off (this is normaly becasue of bushes waving in the wind

If the neighbour is considerate, then a quiet word should be enough. Ask them to walk up your path to see for themselves. Could your neighbours try infra red lighting? The cameras will still be able to "see". We had a similar issue a couple of years ago, and the neighbour tilted the lights away. Much less glare, but the remaining stray light, together with other neighbouring insecurity lights, still affects being able to see the night sky properly, which is one reason we're moving to a darker sky location.

i cant believe that your complaining about this its protection for you as well
if your moaning about the cctv being onto your property not much you can do about it as long as its not directly aimed at your property unless your protecting another camera from damage

its called light nusance and comes with clauses only comes into effect if it shines into your windows and more so the living and bedrooms

If that fails a mirror shining the light back at them often helps.

There’s always 2 sides to a situation. Maybe they think they are doing you a favour covering your property.

2 of my cameras cover more of nextdoor than ours, they do so because its an access point onto our property.

Go and speak to them with an open mind

I would be livid as well.
Far too much light pollution and LED bulbs have made it far worse!

Have a chat - maybe they just didn't think about it.
I put a light up in my front garden and asked the neighbours opposite to let me know if it bothered them, simple to do and everybody ends up happy.

ive just put 2 security lights on my neighbours house and a 100w led flood and there all facing the side of my house when it was dark I went and set them so they all lit his garden and the big light set to the top of the fence no higher a bit of common sense and dialogue normaly sorts it unless you get a prat then its bad news

I had a little house at the seaside. I put up a few PIR lights on the back that shon on my garden and a path.....sometime later someone bought me a duck windmill thing....the wings rotate in one direction whilst the body follows the wind direction....it was fairly big and the wings spun quickly at times......one day the old fella round the back (nice old guy) came round and asked me if I could stop the duck spinning as when the lights came on it made them flicker in his windows like having flashing lights outside.....I saw the effect it was like strobing.....I killed the duck.....

as I said I cant complain about the neighbours facing my house I wired and put them up for him our lass whinged and said the big light was too bright but its not on all the time and it only faces the side of my house and there isn't any windows I have a permanent dd light near the vehicles and well lit up from the station lights so im well happy
