cast steel

ive got some car bits that need welding and ive been informed that they are made from cast steel. what filler rod would you guys recommend? my brain is telling me to use a 309lsi or a 312l but my brain has been known to lie to me should i just use a regular red tipped tungsten?

Casting is the method used to shape it,,,,thats all

It could be cast low alloy, mild, stainless or whatever

Id guess that its some sort of Low Alloy (but it is a guess). With that in mind Id try 312 as its stronger than 309L

If they are critical parts Id like to know more

cast iron is closer to pure iron than cast steel is, cast steel has more alloying elements in it & is less brittle & has more tensile strength

Cast Iron is high carbon iron. If you lower the carbon content you get steel. Steel typically has alloying elements, but the carbon percentage is the important bit. The alloying elements can alter the carbon equivalence value and other material properties. Carbon is important because, well it takes a lot to answer that...

If you lower the carbon content further you would then have iron.

Thats correct and the additional alloying elements can impart vastly different properties yet it is still steel.
Cast Iron is cast because you cant roll it, forge it draw it.......its too brittle
Cast Steel is usually cast because the shape needed isnt possible by any other process, so its shape rather than composition that governs
The only compositional difference between cast steel and steel shaped by another process is that the molten flow is aided by adding silicon. So cast steel may have more si when compared against its wrought equivalent.

they would be a set of hubs off an 80's Japanese car. i was kinda hoping you would say to use the 309 as i only have like 2 312 rods left.

i managed to get a set that my friend had modified and the fabricator he had weld them has used mig. i doubt that he has used any 'funky' mig wire either. although a few people use ones done by this guy im tempted to give them back as im not sure on how strong they are going to be and if they break im going to end up in a wall.

As I said it depends on what steel it really is

Lets assume its an alloy steel so if hes used MS MIG the weld will be weaker. Does this matter? the only answer, is it that it depends on the design and the application.

These days most steel is concast which means it goes straight from the melting pot into a slab, billet or bloom caster. No more ingots these days.

Did you spend much time at Templeborough Steelworks (Magna) when it was working Al? I imagine the museum bit is nothing like what it was like when it was in full swing.

I spent some time in the Labs that did all the testing for them and later I spent time in the Rolling Mill making rod for drawing down into MIG wire. They were the best but the ACCOUNTANTS closed it and moved it the Scunthorpe but forgot that they couldnt do the same stuff.

I spent a lot my training in a Foundry (firth-vickers) where we made lots of castings for aero parts. My boss developed some fanct stainless steels. Ever heard of FV520 maraging steel (it gets hard on ots own...........heyyy) well that was developed by my boss. I helped......a little. My aunt and my cousin also worked for him (incestous in those days).

Back to templeborough. I used to catch the bus outside Steel, Peach and Tozers (Magna) Melting Shop. Massive melting furnaces beside the road. It was hot even on the coldest day. They used to say it never got wet as the heat stopped the rain falling. In those days the road from Sheffield to Rotherham was steel works all the way. 11 miles I think.

There was a pub called the 12 o'clock near to the centre of Sheffield and they used top say "finished work at 2 and i was in Sheffield at 12 oclock".

Loads of stuff happened then (starting to sound like my dad). I used to fetch beer for the Melters. They were allowed 4 pints (I think) per shift. I had a Yoke and I used to walk to a pun called the Corner Pin or the Carwood and get loaded up. The pubs only opened at shift changes so 2pm, 10pm and 6 am, yes 6 in the morning.I think for 2 hours.
