hi

I am current restoring/modifying a fordson major. I have done loads of welding with it should realy try and put sum pics up. I have done all the hard work now. I will be using it to play around at farm . So the draw bar holes are pretty worm, well no harm to it realy at a 1952.

is there away to find out wither it's cast iron or steel as don't want to weld it an the draw bar snaps. Would be glad if any one could advise me

Spark testing can give a good clue, google will get vids showing comparisons of cast iron versus steel etc. The way it machines is also a hint, chip type/size etc. Cast steel can still cover a lot of ground though as 'cast' is just a means to create the raw shape... http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/cast-steel.htm

being a draw bar it will be steel just a quick touch with a grinder will prove if your not sure dark dull red sparks its cast iron. yellowy sparks steel if u have a lathe open the holes up slightly make some sleeves up and weld em in easier than welding the worn parts and re drilling

As said, touch it with a grinder and if the sparks are red it is cast iron and welding it requires a careful approach and the right equipment.

If you post a picture showing the wear you are trying to repair you may get some suggestions as to the best way to tackle it, people on here can have some good ideas!

From the loads put into a draw bar it will be forged steel, the bending force would snap a cast draw bar.

the old ford drawbars weld ok.

repaired quite a few worn drawbars with weld, even welded a couple of broken drawbars back together as it's not unknown for them to snap ( usally caused by years of towing trailers that are a bit to big and a bit to bouncy a bit to fast )

Thanks for the reply.i though it would be fine but just wanted to double check. I was thinking of making sleeves for the holes. . Was thinking would be an easier option. Not looked right into it still plenty other stuff to do first . Finishing making the exhausts for a start
