ive got some legs from a Singer Sewing machine. One side panel is cracked in three places and the stretcher that connects both sides is snapped off and missing.

I want to repair the cracks and fit a new stretcher rail so I can joing the legs together to make a useable base. It's currently painted black but this will be removed to allow repairs and then repainted

What's the best method to make the repairs. I've got MMA with 6013 rods, a Clarke 135 TE Mig and Oxy Fuel for brazing with bronze rods, as well as silver solder and all the correct fluxes.

Ive just made a table out of a Singer sewing machine base.........it cost me about £20 from the local auction

Of those choices Id go with brazing

That's the plan, I've got some nice off cuts of granite work top and I'm planning to make a pastry table for the kitchen, will be about 20" square

v out heat up with a propane torch all over and braze it with oxy acetylene torch .

id braze it too, it works well on cast.
or you could use a cast welding rod, i have metrode rods here for cast that dont require any pre heat which work well on smaller bits like your doing there but i havnt had the balls to chance a larger item without some preheat at least, old habits die hard n all that..

Cheers guys, I'm gonna go with brazing as I'm more successful with that than welding. I'll post up some pictures tommorow showing the damage. Will I need to pre heat surrounding section or go straight to brazing. Gotta big propane torch

Do you need to V out for braze? It's been years since I've done any brazing, but I'd have thought wicking it in to the cracks as is would lead to a stronger, cleaner looking repair, especially with something like cast.

i would anyways, not too much if your trying to keep it neat but it can be dressed after anyways.
