cast iron fins repair

got a couple of old harley barrels
"Knucklehead" i think ?
in the effort to keep the heat down and avoid cracking i laid down a buttering layer with mig bronze then shaped steel plates and silver soldered them
it worked well and no problem of the casting not wetting

I bought a pair of drag racing cases for a 2liter Shovel head years ago....

Nice job, after 45 years of rebuilding old bikes, I have never broken a fin. Though I have lost count of the number of bikes I have bought with broken fins!

i dropped my fanny barnet "villiers" barrel when i was an 11 year old budding mechanic and broke the top fin .
i burst into tears booo hooo hoo
never broke a fin since

Yesterday I turned an old cast iron brake disc on a lathe. The thickness is 10 mm and it is not ventilated. I thought this would be a good source of flat cast iron for motorcycle cylinder fins.

Being able to melt and cast iron is a handy thing.
Think that at least one of my furnaces could do so, but it would really eat the gas....
The fin blank could then be fairly simply cast and welded in, or 'burned on' as a repair, which would be a complex and likely fraught process....

I meant, the material for making the rib implant and where to get a cast iron plate instead of a steel plate...

PS - I found three companies in Ljubljana that deal with iron castings. When I need custom casting, this will make life easier.

Cast iron is hugely variable in its composition, but if you have managed to tame a metallurgist, it has to help a bit....

Brake discs are not a problem to find. Enameled cast iron bathtubs - I forgot when I saw these in scrap metal.
