Carriage / coach bolts in drawer runners

I am wanting to fit some draw runners to a metal frame,

Just downloaded the drawings of the runners and alongside the usual round holes they have square holes for carriage bolts which would make them easier to install.

No details are given for the thickness of the runner material so what I want to know is:

If I use carriage bolts will the square bit protrude from the back of the runner or not?
Basically can I just have a round hole in the frame or will I need a square hole?

I dont have any to hand to try it with so just wondered if someone has used them before, i have only ever used round screws & bolts which can be a pain or a 2 man job to fit .

Just found a m6 bolt, about 4-5mm of square under the head which I think is going to be a fair bit more than the thickness of the runner so not going to work unless I can find some bolts with less protruding

Hi, Have you got room to put a washer shim between the runner and the frame that the square will pass through?

That's not a bad idea, I think I will have to order the runners and see if I can extend them, pop the bolts in and close the runner and see if that holds them in place so I can turn it over to stick some washers/shims on.

Also, just looking at the drawing of the runner and the spacing for the mount holes seems to be completely random, is there any sort of standard for this or do they just put them wherever they like?

That's the sort of thing I have been using before,
Problem is these are some long runners and inside a casing so it needs a second person to hold the hex key in place.

Why not use pop rivets they work good on toolboxes.

I'm with @Tom O , pop rivets is the way to go, if necessary cut a bit off the rivet for a neater job.

Drill bigger hole in frame so square will pull in to frame & lock
