Cargo netting.

Folks.

My "bread and butter" work at the moment and for the foreseeable future is carrying bricks and blocks, and sadly they sometimes need sheeting or netting. I have sheets on my wagon but as this is a reasonably new stream of work for the company our stock of nets is woefully inadequate.

Rather than get them involved with sorting this out for me, mainly because I'll only end up with what someone else thinks I need rather than what I actually need , I'm trying to source some cargo netting. In a moment of repurposeful sustainability, I even wondered about using dead trawl netting?? Prices for netting seem to vary from "How much??" to " HOW MUCH?????" so I thought I'd ask the collective if they know of any sources of said netting , two pieces about 30' x 15' which I can then cut to size and fit out with rope ties myself.

Yup. I’ve access to endless supplies of salmon farm netting. The top net is a 70m round. I’ve one with a chunk cut out to make a chicken run.

Salmon pen net is about 90m long x 70m diameter. Much heavier gauge net. I can get it but it’s a nuisance as I don’t need it and the salmon guys prefer you to take a whole one. Group purchase?!?!

Depends how much financial pain is involved?

And as weird as this sounds, I prefer to sort this kind of gear myself because it's mine and will only be used by me. Most of our drivers aren't as fastidious about there gear as I am, so I tend to use my own stuff. As I say, it probably sounds weird but it works for me.

What would worry me - where does the liability end? Something comes off and goes through a windscreen . . . if its your bit of net of some random designation rather than company supplied, approved for use for hanging onto to loads on trailers . . . how good is your personal liability insurance . . .?

Personal lifting, strapping, load securing, gear in our place is absolutely banned -same if its company gear with the wrong tag, expired tag, or tag missing, its a serious disciplinary offence and out the door - no ifs, no buts. Not covered under company insurance.

Aye, it's a situation like "as long as it's all right, it's all right". But, let anything go wrong and the excrement meets the spinney thing, irrespective of how well intentioned your efforts were, you could find yourself in deep doo-doo and potentially standing alone in the dock.

You make too many concessions to your employers imo, it's their duty to make sure your wagon is fully and properly equipped for the job(s) in hand.

I spent an enjoyable few days camping next to the beach at Gatehouse of Fleet, and while the children played (argued?) I worked out how to / knit / sew or whatever you do to make fish nets from a washed up scrap, bought a reel of suitable twine and made a bright orange net big enough to cover my long wheelbase Series 3 Landrover Safari roof rack.

That was 1986 and I still have the net but sadly not the Landrover

Might take a bit longer to cover a Lorry load of bricks !

Get some scaffold debris netting and stitch what size you need, it's cheap enough.

Ordinary debris netting isn't good enough to net a load - it's designed to stop wind-blown materials. The high-density stuff is much stronger but it's expensive and you don't see it often.

I'd be looking around metal decking companies. They use netting for safety in case of a fall and they often get burned from the stud welding.

VOSA have their own ideas as to what constitutes a secure load, I thought blanket netting/sheeting was now out of the equation .

Slightly different situation, I was on the M18 on Wednesday making good progress as they say and came up behind a Range Rover towing a plant trailer on which was a collapsed pallet of bricks, still shrink wrapped but not intact.
What to do? Headlight flashing as I overtook, horn blowing and much hand waving failed to draw the drivers attention. So either I was the hundredth driver to try warning him and he did not care or he was trying to ignore the prat in the BMW.
Just saying that was one pallet of escaping bricks, I can see that netting your load could only help but I am not sure I would want to find a truck load of freedom seeking bricks retained by a fishing net even if that is the lesser of two evils.
Difficult one to call.

Can’t say about that but I know ropes and dolly knots are. It’s a non certificated load restraint.

seems if the rope is rated you can but I’ve never seen one used for that purpose. Also when you tie a knot you de rate the rope anyway

Hi, As far as I understand it if a load or part of it comes off, it's deemed an 'insecure load' and that's drivers responsibility. Whether it's company supplied or personal is irrelevant, It's the driver that is ultimately responsible. A company insisting on use of their gear is them covering their own back because they can say "It's appropriate gear, the driver must have got it wrong"

I got some safety netting from G&M Netting in middlewich, proper stuff, they supply scaffold, cargo, etc etc. Wasn't too expensive but that was about 12 years ago.

On the way into Guildford from here there is a bit of road that's sunken to the kerbside quite badly and just as you pass this its sunk to the offside, 10mph max in a truck for me or you will be wearing just about everything not tied down in the cab for a hat. There was a Travis Perkins truck parked up there the other day, it had shot a few packs of block pavers over the ali high sides and all over the road, luckily nothing coming the other way. Imagine three tons of block pavers being dumped on your bonnet at 30mph + whatever speed the truck was travelling at.
