carburettor cleaner

anyone know if u can get a carburettor cleaner to run through the carb without stripping it to bits. i suspect the jets may be partialy clogged with gum. the engine runs but its a bit lumpy . its on an old guys 1935 aliss chalmers tractor its been run on un leaded with petrol additive and stood the winter .

Just spray normal carb cleaner into it when running !! Thats what I've done with bike carbs in the past, then spray an excess in cut the engine and leave it to stand. If that doesn't work, drain the float chamber and fill it with carb cleaner.

hi,you can get fuel system cleaners that you add to the fuel tank and do just what you are after,forte used to do one that an engine would run on in place of petrol,just hold it on half revs and away you go,

Oh, make sure the fuel is drained and fresh used to run it.

There are various engine cleaner solvents that will clean it better than most others have alook in a Halfords near the engine flush stuff I seem to recall they are made for Wynns
I used half a 500 ml bottle to soak a chainsaw carb that had sat for three years with the two stroke mix dryig up . A day in the solvent and hey presto a quick air line blast after taking out the needle and reassembling ..... it was away like the clappers.

I used Broquet from David Locke it is a catalyst pellet system in a carrier mesh for three cars that were built for leaded fuel .
He developed it from the catalysts used in WWW 2 so that spitfires could run on chap dirty unleaded Russian fuel

When I sold them I took the catalyst out and put it in our new diesel car tanks .. they work well .
David says he will cough up any repair costs from using them if it is down to damage that is occasioned because of using his Broquet .
So far he says no one has claimed .

When I took the head off the 85 ,000 mile citroen BX 19 GTI ( 42,000 miles of using Broquet ) the pistons were gleaming clean . Fuel ecomony was also up on the other two vehicles as well as the GTI.

As far as I recall, there's not a shred of factual evidence to prove that the 'Broquet' pellets do anything they're claimed to.

BS! , i can sell you some old brass nuts in an onion bag you could save UP TO 6% on your fuel bill etc etc etc think the fuel savings comes from having a lighter wallet the rest of the claims are made up (or at least have absolutley no scientific basis or peer reviewed or published data to substantiate the claims)

as for OP ...many carb cleaners are for the outside of the carb and contain oils and silicones to condition the carb , best results is to take the lid off and spray inside all the drillings with brake cleaner which shifts all the crap and evaporates completely leaving no residue, spraying down the throat of the carb is less effective as the solvent is still air side and just goes in to the engine

The best way with old engines is to get it revving and dump a load of redex into the air intake watch the clouds of smoke and then back to as it should be. my grandad did this in the middle of harvest with the old fergies when it started running a bit rough.

that doesnt solve the problem of gummed up jets by using an aditive in the unleaded petrol whatever is put in the petrol must go through the carb and clean out the blocked jets otherwise its strip it and clean it with acetone and refit . there isnt a quick fix

I'm a big fan of if a carb is gummed up and visibly dirty to take it off, strip it down, clean it completely with carb cleaner and compressed air and then reassemble with new gaskets. If it's got to the state where jets are blocked then it's quite likely that other things are dirty inside.

Of course - this does depend on how difficult it is to remove the carb and strip it. With Renault 5 GT Turbos (I've got two), it's not too bad a job. But I guess a big supercharged V8 for example would take a lot more disassembling to get the carbs out

Another way is ultrasonic cleaning. works well without removing too many parts

Gum turpentine tends to be my favourite for cleaning. I've always classed acetone as being a bit too aggressive for my taste.

If primary jets are blocked no amount of additive is going to cure it. Ultrasonic might do it eventually but physical poking with a wire brush bristle is sometimes the only realistic way. My friend at the bike shop recently bought an ultrasonic bath for bike carbs and it does a good job.
