gotboost, I don't wish to sound mean, but as a constructive suggestion, if you have to ask these questions you must know absolutely nothing about Tig welding, so these questions might not be the right ones to ask. You need to learn some basics first.

If you are welding steel and aluminium get ceriated or zirconiated tungstens and you will be able to use them with AC or DC, your red tip thoriated is for use on DC only. Argon gas is fine for both.

Been a MSA scrute for 30+years,from formula 2 to club events, have fitted loads of rollcages and inspected thousands, am not a tigger, so hear goes!!!. Current MSA thinking from Jan '11 seminars, a well migged cage is better than an aesthetic but poor tigged.Some "pro"tigged cages have tiny fillets, often smaller than my steel tigged mountain bike.Raises concern they may not be strong enough. Have seen tigged "quick repair" rollcage sections showing "fillets!" Very worrying for us, thus prob. for you??

Dear Dr Shox, I hope so. We still see privately and pro built rally cars for logbooking, with such cages of extremely small tig fillets. A reason given on the 2009 Cambrian Rally by an Evo builder from up North was to save weight!!! I'm not comparing strengths of mig welds to tig welds: I truly don't know, it's not my forte. But on a simplistic level, a tidy mig weld is probably ok, and untidy one isn't. But evidence has shown that a good looking tig weld with small fillets can be a problem. When logbooking a rally car, many of us scrutes are simple souls, just enthusiasts really. Some have experience of welding and engineering, and some not. But it really worries us when presented with a freshly built rallycar at over £100k cost with dodgy workmanship on the rollcage. It's a real p****r to have to tell the builder to remedy the situation.With quality "ready made cages", ie Safety Devices, it's never a prob. The installation to the car may be questionable, but not the cage. But most full cages come as a bag of tubes, with tubes going everywhere, especially suspension points (and I know why) and this situation is the worst.
I logbook many cars each year, much more than most other scrutes and yet we still see problem cages (at least 5 cars in the last 7 weeks!)
I can name the last 4 cars to have passed logbooking scrutiny with no remedial action required on their cages, out of about 160 cars! Would you believe welds between adjoining tubes not circumferentialy welded. Have spotted this very often.
Many of us scrutes will gladly inspect cars during their build at no cost, to allay any probs.
