Following requests (just one really), here's some pics of a wee dod I made for starting the arc on a scratch start tig.
It consists simply of a bit of bent sheet, a clamping piece, and a brush from some motor or other (9" angle grinder I think)
To start the arc, place the holder next to the beginning of the weld, clamped to the work if necessary, scratch to the brush and move the arc to the area to be welded.
It's very basic, cheap and could be refined, but it works. Looks a bit shagged out too.
The best alternative is to learn to scratch without the tungsten sticking: it's a practice thing and perfectly possible.
